Wilkes Baseball Falls Twice to Conclude Series with DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, PA – The Wilkes University baseball team dropped a pair of games to conclude the season series with host DeSales University falling 10-7 in game one before a 9-6 defeat in game two Saturday afternoon.

Wilkes slips to 16-18 overall and finishes Freedom play with a 10-11 mark. The Colonels will await to see if they are postseason bound over the next week as several other Freedom teams conclude their schedules.

Wilkes led 6-3 after two innings of play in game one thanks to RBI hits from Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston) and Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) in the first and James Brown (Covington, PA/North Pocono) and Matthew Reese (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro) in the second.

DeSales answered with two runs in the third and took the lead for good in the fourth putting up five tallies in the frame holding on to the 10-7 victory. Tanner Smith (Upper Black Eddy, PA/Palisades) scored on a wild pitch in the seventh for Wilkes but the Colonels were unable to mount anymore of a comeback in the contest.

Ruch led the Wilkes hitters finishing 3-for-3 with one RBI. Brown, Champi and Reese all added two hits for the Colonels at the plate. Patrick Condo (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) suffered the loss on the hill in game one going three innings allowing eight runs on eight hits.

Game two saw DeSales jump out to a 5-0 lead after three innings before a Wilkes rally in the fourth, fifth and sixth gave the Colonels a 6-5 lead.

Joshua Slocum (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) connected on a two-run triple followed by a Jeff Roedell (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) RBI single to bring the Colonels to within two at 5-3. Reese reached on a fielder's choice scoring the Colonels fourth tally and Ruch added an RBI double before another RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Bobby Schappell (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) gave Wilkes a 6-5 lead.

From there DeSales used a three-run triple and RBI groundout in the sixth to escape with the season series sweep.

Ruch, Brown and Slocum each tallied two hits for the Colonels offense. Marcus Leaf (Reading, PA/Berks Catholic) entered in relief of starter Johnny Jan Jr. (Germantown, MD/Northwest) to receive the loss on the mound.

Wilkes takes to the road tomorrow (Sunday) for a road doubleheader at Penn State Harrisburg at 1:00 p.m.
