Box Score 2 Softball Sweeps Day Two of Spring Trip
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Wilkes University softball team added two more wins to its record on Tuesday, defeating SUNYIT 8-0 in five innings this morning before defeating Mt. Aloysius for the second time in as many days this afternoon by a 7-4 final.
The Lady Colonels are 3-1 on the season after the sweep.
Neither team generated much offense through the first two innings of the first game, with Wilkes ending both innings with double plays. The Lady Colonels got on the board in the third inning when
Christina Gambino (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) tripled to lead off the inning and came around to score on a single by
Sarah Birchmeier (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East).
Wilkes broke the game open in the fifth, scoring seven runs on eight hits, two walks, and a SUNYIT throwing error to end the game.
Gambino pitched her first career complete-game shutout, surrendering one hit with two walks and one strikeout. SUNYIT managed to only get three balls out of the infield the entire game.
In the second game, Mt. Aloysius got out to the first lead with a run in the first inning. The Lady Colonels struck back in the second, scoring two runs on one hit, two walks, and a fielding error.
Lacey Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) led off the inning with a walk, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Mikala Strum (Grass Valley, CA/Nevada Union). Bixler moved to third on a passed ball, with
Haley Welker (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) following with another walk and promptly stole second. Both runners came around to score on
Alexis Ayache (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua)'s single, helping her own cause on the mound and giving Wilkes the 2-1 lead.
Mt. Aloysius retook the lead in the fourth, scoring two runs on two hits, one walk, and a fielding error to take a 3-2 lead.
The Lady Colonels retook the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs on three hits, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch.
Caitlin Brown (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) led off the inning getting hit by a pitch and was followed with a double by
Bethany Shaud (Drums, PA/Marion Catholic), scoring Brown.
Mia Lussier (Somerset, MA/Somerset Berkley) and Birchmeier followed with walks to load the bases, and all three came around to score on
Grace Sanzalone (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingstone)'s three-run triple. Strum drove in Sanzalone with a single to finish the scoring and put Wilkes up 7-3. Mt. Aloysius scored one more run in the top of the fifth off of
Bethany Shaud (Drums, PA/Marion Catholic), but Shaud settled down to stifle Mt. Aloysius' offense through the rest of the game.
Ayache went the first 3.2 innings, surrendering three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks, settling for a no-decision. Shaud worked the final 3.1 innings surrendering one run on four hits with one strikeout and one walk to earn her first career win.
The Lady Colonels return to action tomorrow when they face Sweet Briar College at 11:30 a.m., and will also face Malone University at 5:30 p.m.
