Wilkes Wrestling Completes Day One of NCAA Division III Mideast Regional

YORK, Pa. – The Wilkes University wrestling team completed the first day of the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional hosted by York College of Pennsylvania on Saturday.

At 125-lbs, senior Guesseppe Rea (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) advanced to the round of 16 with a first round bye, and earned a 9-5 decision victory over Heidelberg's Mason Brainerd to advance to the quarterfinals, where he notched a 6-5 decision victory over Chris Doyle of Baldwin Wallace. Rea will face Jonathan Haas of The College at Brockport.

At 133-lbs, senior Pankil Chander (Cedarhurst, NY/Lawrence) advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-0 decision victory over Alec Hoover of Case Western. In the quarterfinal, Chander was defeated by Charlie Nash of Baldwin Wallace. Chander earned a 15-7 major decision victory over Ryan Hornack of Heidelberg in the consolation round of eight to advance to the consolation round of four where he will face Hunter Harris of Messiah.

At 141-lbs, junior Matthew Grossmann (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) advanced to the round of 16 on a bye, and in the round of 16 earned a 10-2 major decision victory over Joe Santomarco to advance to the quarterfinals, where he was defeated by Josh Decatur of Baldwin Wallace. Grossmann earned a 10-2 major decision victory over Jon Raugh of Muskingham to advance to the consolation round of four where he will face Nathan Walker of The College at Brockport.

At 149-lbs, freshman Kyle Medrow (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson) earned a bye in the round of 32 to advance to the round of 16 where he earned an 11-6 decision victory over Stephen Maloney of Messiah. In the quarterfinals, Medrow was defeated by Seth Lansberry of Lycoming. In the consolation round of eight, Medrow earned a 14-1 major decision victory over Isaac Collier of Case Western to advance to the consolation round of four, where he will face Mount Union's Alex Funderburg.

At 157-lbs, junior Nicholas Racanelli (West Creek, NJ/Southern Regional) earned a first round bye to advance to the round of 16 where he earned a 5-2 decision victory over Daniel Reagan of The College at Brockport. In the quarterfinals, Racanelli defeated Chad Wickard of York 4-2 to advance to face Jeff Hojnacki in the semifinals.

At 165-lbs, graduate student Michael Paskas (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) earned a round of 32 bye, advancing to the round of 16 where he was defeated by Messiah's Larry Cannon. In the consolation round of 16, Paskas earned a bye to advance to the consolation round of eight to face Connor Gordon of Case Western, earning a 7-1 decision victory to advance to the consolation round of eight where he fell to Tyler Rhoads of York. Paskas ends his graduate season with a 20-16 record.

At 174-lbs, freshman Justin Morel (Corona, NY/Mt. St. Michael Academy) earned a bye in the round of 32 to advance to the round of 16 where he fell to Tory Cain of RIT. Morel had a bye in the consolation round of 16 #2, advancing to the consolation round of 8 #1 where he earned a 7-6 decision victory over Darren Decker from Heidelberg. Morel was defeated by Nick Miller of Mount Union. Morel ends his freshman season with a 14-22 record.

At 184-lbs, senior Jacob Brook (Layton, NJ/Kittatiny) advanced to the round of 16 with a bye, where he fell to Heidelberg's Dillen Decker. In the consolation round of 16 #2, Brook was defeated by Muskingham's Anthony Cole-Young. Brook completes his senior season with a 5-14 record.

At 197-lbs, senior Jordan Nochimson (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) advanced to the round of 16 with a bye where he fell to Tristan Engle of The College at Brockport. Nochimson advanced through the consolation round of 16 #2 with a bye to the consolation round of eight #1 where he was defeated by Heidelberg's Gage Finegan. Nochimson finished his senior year with a 9-17 record.

At heavyweight, sophomore John Austin (Glenmoore, PA/Downingtown West) advanced to the round of 16 with a bye, where he was defeated by Scranton's Salvatore Montuori. Austin finished his sophomore season with 1-4 record.

The 2017 NCAA Division III Mideast regional continues tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m.
