Wilkes Men's Tennis Completes Day One Action at the MAC Individual Championship

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University men's tennis team completed day one action at the 2019 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Men's Tennis Individual Championship on Saturday at the Kirby Park and Ralston Athletic Complex courts. The Colonels will head into Sunday's action with a chance at two titles.

Mike Ellis (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) played his way into Sunday's No. 1 Singles semifinals with two victories today. Ellis knocked off Ben DeLeo of Hood 6-3, 6-2 in the first round and then played the No. 3 seed of Danny Lynn from DeSales in the quarterfinals. Ellis was able to defeat Lynn in a nail biter 7-6 (7), 5-7, 10-6. He will face the No. 2 seed of Tyler Milan from King's in a semifinal matchup tomorrow.

In the No. 3 Doubles flight Larry Scartz (Woodbridge, VA/Home School) and Isaac Shenton (Shippensburg, PA/James Buchanan) won twice to advance to Sunday's semifinal round. The Wilkes duo defeated David Sherbakov and Luke Thatcher of Arcadia by an 8-2 score in the first round. Then in the quarterfinals Scartz and Shenton took an 8-1 victory against the No. 2 seed of Ben Hinkley and Luke Senft of Lebanon Valley. The Colonels No. 3 pairing will face Lukas Sanidas and Chad Smialek of Stevenson in the semifinal round tomorrow.

In the No. 2 Singles bracket it was Scartz who was seeded No. 3 that fell in the first round to Alex Mantsevich of Messiah 3-6, 7-5, 10-6.

At No. 3 Singles it was Jack Maline (Northport, NY/Northport) in the lineup for the Colonels. Maline defeated Matt McCaffrey of Misericordia 6-0, 6-2 in the first round. He then faced the No. 2 seed of Nick Balaci of Lebanon Valley. Maline battled tough with a first set victory but fell 5-7, 6-3, 10-7.

Colin Greenman (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) was seeded second in the No. 4 Singles flight and had a first round bye. In the quarterfinal round Greenman lost 6-1, 2-6, 10-7 to Reed Morris of Lebanon Valley.

Alec Levin (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) won his No. 5 Singles first round match against Connor Rose of Messiah in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 before dropping a quarterfinal match to the No. 1 seed from Stevens in Gabriel Sifuentes 6-2, 6-0.

Freshman Jolen Nortey (East Stroudsburg, PA/Evergreen) debuted as the No. 2 seed at No. 6 Singles.  He received a bye into the quarterfinal round where he dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Ellis Martin of Messiah.

In the No. 7 Singles flight it was Connor Murphy (Denver, PA/Cocalico) competing for the Colonels. The sophomore dropped his first round match to Keller Martin of Messiah 6-0, 6-2.

At No. 1 Doubles the team of Ellis and Matt Angara (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) picked up a first round victory against the Arcadia pairing of Nicholas Simeone and Jonathan Noble by an 8-4 score. In their next match the Colonels pair fell 8-3 to the No. 3 seed from Lebanon Valley as it was Justin Schuetz and Blake Martin who advanced out of the quarterfinal round.

Greenman and Maline were winners by an 8-5 score against Mantsevich and K. Martin of Messiah in the first round of the No. 2 Doubles flight. In the quarterfinals Greenman and Maline fell 8-4 to the No. 4 seed from DeSales in Will Pollick and Nolan Beck.

Wilkes' No. 4 Doubles team of Levin and Chris Maderitz (York, PA/Central York) dropped their quarterfinal match to Garrett Kincaid and Brian Li of Stevens in a tight match that went to a tiebreak. The Ducks duo won 8-7 (4).

Ellis will compete for the No. 1 Singles title and the team of Scartz and Shenton will battle for the No. 3 Doubles title tomorrow when action continues at the 2019 MAC Individual Championship.
