Flynn's Hat Trick Propels Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Past Bryn Athyn
WILKES-BARRE –
Donald Flynn (Randolph, NJ/) netted three goals including the game-winner as the Wilkes University men's ice hockey team defeated visiting Bryn Athyn College 5-3 in non-conference action at the Toyota SportsPlex Tuesday night.
With the victory Wilkes improved to 10-2-0 overall heading into the winter break. Bryn Athyn dropped to 6-4-2 overall.
Flynn started the scoring 6:13 into the first period when he netted a power-play goal off assists from
Tyler Barrow (Massapequa, NY/) and
Nick Fea (Oak Ridge, NJ/) after the Lions took a slashing penalty.
Bryn Athyn responded with a goal at the 9:39 mark off the stick of Nikita Smirnov. After the Colonels took a charging penalty the Lions took the lead when Devon Becker's shot from the point found the top of the net at the 13:42 mark.
Ben Stefanini (Framingham, MA) evened the game at 2-2 8:13 into the second period when he collected his own blocked shot and had the puck trickle over the goal line after getting through the Lions goaltender. The goal was the first of the sophomore forwards career.
Flynn then gave the Colonels the lead back after taking the puck from a defender and flicking a backhanded shot into the near side of the net for the 3-2 lead with 6:33 left in the second period.
The hat trick was completed at the 18:04 mark of the second when Flynn notched his second power-play goal as he skated past multiple Lion defenders after collecting the puck from goaltender
Michael Paterson-Jones (Baldwinsville, NY). The goal was the 14th of the season for Flynn who now has three or more goals in three games this season.
Dakota Ulmer brought the Lions back within one goal just 2:36 into the third period but the Colonels dominated play from that point forward. Wilkes outshot Bryn Athyn by a 20-5 margin in the final period.
Phil Erickson (Eau Claire, WI/) netted the Colonels lone goal of the third at the 9:06 mark to restore the two-goal lead. The sophomore forward made a nice play through the neutral zone after getting an outlet pass from
Chris Dalfarra (Warrington, PA/) and then beat his defender and the goaltender to make the score 5-3.
Paterson-Jones stayed undefeated on the season as the freshman moved to 8-0 after making 27 saves including 14 in the first period. McKenzie Chalmers made 29 saves for Bryn Athyn including 19 in the third period.
Wilkes held a 34-30 advantage in shots-on-goal for the game as Flynn had a game-high six. Wilkes also led 40-35 in the faceoff circle with
Joey Pasquini (Schenectady, NY/) going 12-of-18 to lead the way. Wilkes blocked 15 shots compared to 13 for Bryn Athyn.
Charlie Spetz (Oak Ridge, NJ),
Dylan Kuipers (Andover, NJ/), and
Michael Gurska (Revere, MA/) each had two blocks each.
The two teams will complete the home-and-home series following a three-week holiday layoff when the Colonels travel to Bryn Athyn, Pa. on Tuesday, January 7 for a 7:00 p.m. game.
