No. 14 Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Dominates Bryn Athyn
BRYN ATHYN, PA – Fresh off earning its first-ever national ranking of No. 14 yesterday, the Wilkes University men's ice hockey team turned in a dominating performance during a 5-1 victory at Bryn Athyn College Tuesday night. With the victory the Colonels have swept a pair of non-conference games against the Lions separated by three weeks.
Wilkes is now 11-2-0 overall while Bryn Athyn is 7-6-2. The Colonels scored five-or-more goals now for the eighth time this season and recorded a season-high 50 shots on goal in this contest.
The Colonels started fast with three first-period goals.
Nick Fea (Oak Ridge, NJ/) led the charge with the first goal at the 6:08 mark off assists from
Michael Gurska (Revere, MA/) and
Tyler Barrow (Massapequa, NY/) on the power play.
Dylan Kuipers (Andover, NJ/) then scored just 31 seconds later as Gurska picked up another assist along with
Phil Erickson (Eau Claire, WI/).
The Lions got a goal back at the 9:13 mark of the first but
Donald Flynn (Randolph, NJ/) answered with a goal at the 14:48 mark as the Colonels took a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.
Barrow scored the lone tally of the second period as he found the net on the power play off the third assist of the game for Gurska and Flynn at the 16:05 mark.
Fea capped the scoring 8:12 into the final frame for his second goal of the night again on the power play. Barrow picked up his second assist of the night and third point on the play.
The Colonels dominated with a 50-32 shot advantage led by seven each from
Tyson Araujo (Oak Bluffs, MA/) and Barrow. Wilkes went 3-for-9 on the power play and the Wilkes penalty kill was strong as it forced Bryn Athyn to a 0-for-4 mark on its power plays. The Colonels also set the tone for the game in the faceoff circle as Wilkes held a decisive 47-27 edge led by a 15-of-19 effort from Barrow
Brandon Gordon (Sault Ste. Marie, MI/) made a season-high 31 saves to pick up his third victory of the season between the pipes. The sophomore goaltender stopped all but one shot for a .969 save percentage on the night. Gabriel Couture made 45 stops for Bryn Athyn in the losing effort.
The Colonels will now gear up for their final non-conference matchup of the season next Tuesday, January 14 when they travel to face SUNY Cortland at 5:00 p.m.
