Wilkes Men's Tennis Picks Up Gritty Win Over Ohio Northern
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Wilkes University men's tennis team came from behind to beat Ohio Northern University 6-3 on Tuesday night to improve to 2-1 in the spring.
Wilkes got off to a good start in doubles play as #3 Jonathan White (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley) and Chris Maderitz (York, PA/Central York) defeated Ohio Northern 8-4.
The Polar Bears would counter by squeaking by #2 Braddock Chow (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) and Mike Ellis (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) 6-8 before #1 Courtney Murphy (Bronx, NY/Christopher Columbus) and Andrew MacDonald (Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Regional) continued their strong partnership by doubling up Ohio Northern 8-4 to head into singles up 2-1.
The Colonels would start singles play with a pair of comeback wins as #3 Chow (1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7) and #4 Maderitz (3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) came back from first set losses to beat their opponents in third set super breakers.
After #2 White fell 3-6, 1-6 to cut the Wilkes advantage to 4-2, #1 Murphy played an emotional three-setter, winning 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) to clinch the match for the Colonels at 5-2.
#5 Larry Scartz (Woodbridge, VA/Home School) had little trouble in his 6-4, 6-1 win before #6 Jack Maline (Northport, NY/Northport) fought valiantly in his first singles match of the spring before falling 2-6, 6-7 (7-9).
Wilkes will practice on Wednesday before closing out its spring break trip with a dual match against Methodist University (8:30 a.m.) and Missouri Valley College (3:30 p.m.).
