Box Score 2 Wilkes Men's Tennis Drops a Pair of Matches on Thursday
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Wilkes University men's tennis team had a tough end to their spring break trip as they dropped matches to Methodist University and Missouri Valley College on Thursday to head back home at 2-3.
In #2 doubles, Braddock Chow (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) and Mike Ellis (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) fell to Methodist 5-8 to put Wilkes down 1-0.
#3 Jonathan White (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley) and Chris Maderitz (York, PA/Central York) played a tough match against the Monarchs before eventually falling in the tiebreaker 7-8 (3-7). The #1 pairing of Courtney Murphy (Bronx, NY/Christopher Columbus) and Andrew MacDonald (Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Regional) continued their strong partnership by picking up a big doubles point in their tiebreaker 8-7 (7-3) to head into singles trailing 2-1.
#1 Murphy blanked the Monarchs 6-0, 6-0 to start off singles and tie things up at 2-2.
Methodist would answer back as they defeated #2 Chow (1-6, 0-6) and #4 Maderitz (2-6, 2-6) to pull within one match of clinching at 4-2.
#3 White found himself up 6-3 after the first set but his opponent countered with a 6-3 set of his own to force a super-breaker. Methodist took that (1-0) by a score of 10-5 to clinch the match for the Monarchs at 5-2.
In the closing singles of the match, #6 Jack Maline (Northport, NY/Northport) lost 4-6, 3-6 before #5 Larry Scartz (Woodbridge, VA/Home School) took a 2-6, 3-6 defeat as the Colonels fell by a final of 7-2.
After a break, Wilkes faced off against Missouri Valley College at the Hilton Head Beach & Tennis Resort.
The navy and gold would have a tough time in doubles as #2 Chow / Ellis were blanked 0-8. The Vikings handed #3 White / Maderitz a 4-8 loss before earning the sweep by doubling up #1 Murphy / MacDonald 8-4.
In singles action, #1 Chow dropped a quick 0-6, 0-6 match to put the Vikings within one of clinching at 4-0.
After taking the first set 6-2, #3 White fell 1-6 in the second before losing the super-breaker 6-10 which sealed the victory for the Mustangs.
Scartz had a tough match in the #4 spot, getting blanked 0-6, 0-6 while Maderitz also lost in the #2 spot 3-6, 1-6.
In the closing matches, #5 Maline and #6 Colin Greenman (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) each lost 0-6, 2-6, as the Colonels fell 9-0 to the Vikings.
Wilkes returns to court back up north when it heads to Muhlenberg College on Saturday, March 16th for a 10:00 a.m. match.
