Wilkes Men's Tennis Splits a Pair of Matches on Saturday
CENTER VALLEY, PA – The Wilkes University men's tennis team defeated conference foe DeSales 7-2 on Saturday before falling to Division I Villanova 6-1 in the afternoon.
Wilkes stands at 8-5 overall and 4-0 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom.
The Colonels swept doubles play as the #1 duo of Courtney Murphy (Bronx, NY/Christopher Columbus) and Andrew MacDonald (Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Regional) were tested but survived in an 8-6 win. Braddock Chow (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) and Mike Ellis (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) doubled up the Bulldogs 8-4 in the #2 doubles match before #3 Jonathan White (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley) and Chris Maderitz (York, PA/Central York) blanked their opponents 8-0.
#1 Murphy had little trouble in his singles match as he cruised to a 6-0. 6-1 victory.
#2 Maderitz one-upped his teammate by keeping his opponent off the board in a 6-0, 6-0 win.
#3 White picked up his second victory of the day 6-2, 6-3 while #4 Larry Scartz (Woodbridge, VA/Home School) won his match in reverse 6-3, 6-2 fashion.
Wilkes dropped the #5 and #6 matches as Alec Levin (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) lost a tough 7-5 first set before falling in the second 6-2 and #6 Matt Angara (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) battled in his match before ultimately losing 6-3, 6-4.
The Colonels then made the trip to Villanova to square off with the Division I Wildcats.
This time the navy and gold were swept in doubles as #1 Murphy/MacDonald fell 6-2 and #2 Chow/Ellis were defeated 6-1. The #3 doubles match was a tight affair as White/Maderitz fell in a breaker 8-6 to lose the match 7-6 (8-6) as the Wildcats secured the one doubles point
Murphy recorded the lone Wilkes point of the match, winning 6-3, 7-5 in the #1 spot.
#2 Maderitz was doubled up in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 as #3 White fell 6-0, 6-3.
#4 Scartz had a tough time getting things going in his match as he was dispatched 6-1, 6-0.
#5 Colin Greenman (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) and #6 MacDonald rounded out the lineup with identical 6-0, 6-0 defeats.
The Colonels return home to the Ralston Athletic Complex on Sunday, April 14th as they welcome Keystone for an 11:00 a.m. match.
