Wilkes Men's Tennis Defeats Eastern 8-1
EDWARDSVILLE, PA – The Wilkes University men's tennis team handed the Eastern University Eagles and 8-1 defeat at the Ralston Athletic Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
Wilkes improves to 10-5 overall and 5-0 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom with the win.
Doubles play started with the #1 pairing of Courtney Murphy (Bronx, NY/Christopher Columbus) and Andrew MacDonald (Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Regional) blanking Eastern 8-0 before a new #3 pairing of Larry Scartz (Woodbridge, VA/Home School) and Colin Greenman (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) cruised to an 8-2 victory. The #2 doubles match was the closest of the three but the Colonels earned a sweep thanks to an 8-6 win by Chris Maderitz (York, PA/Central York) and Isaac Shenton (Saint Thomas, PA/James Buchanan).
Alec Levin (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) started off singles play with a 7-5, 6-2 victory in the #4 spot.
#2 Scartz clinched the match for the navy and gold by coming back from a 3-6 first set loss to take the next two sets by identical 6-2, 6-2 margins.
#1 Maderitz cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory while #6 Shenton faced little trouble in his 6-1, 6-1 win.
The Eagles picked up their lone point of the match in the #5 spot, defeating MacDonald 6-4, 6-2 before #3 Greenman closed out the match with an 8-1 win.
Wilkes returns to action on Wednesday, April 24th when it takes the court against rival King's at 3:30 p.m. in a MAC Freedom match.
