Wilkes Men's Tennis Clinches #1 Seed with Win over Rival King's

 

WILKES-BARRE, PA – The Wilkes University men's tennis team shutout King's College 9-0 on Wednesday afternoon to improve to 6-0 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) and lock up the top spot heading into the postseason tournament.

 

The Colonels now stand at 11-5 overall.

 

Doubles play finished in order as the #1 pairing of Courtney Murphy (Bronx, NY/Christopher Columbus) and Mike Ellis (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) breezed to an 8-1 win. That was quickly one-upped with the 8-0 blanking by #2 Chris Maderitz (York, PA/Central York) and Jonathan White (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley). The navy and gold finished the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win at #3 doubles by Alec Levin (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) and Colin Greenman (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees).

 

Levin started off singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing in the #6 spot while Ellis got another opportunity in singles and won his #5 match 6-0, 6-1 to clinch the victory for Wilkes.

 

#4 Greenman kept the momentum in the Colonels favor with a 6-1, 6-1 win before Maderitz took his #2 singles match 6-1, 6-2.

 

#3 Larry Scartz (Woodbridge, VA/Home School) dropped a pair of games in his 6-1, 6-1 win before #1 Murphy closed things out with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

 

Wilkes returns to the courts tomorrow when it heads to Bloomsburg to take on the Division II Huskies at 5:00 p.m.
