Schell's Score Completes Colonel Comeback against Nazareth

WILKES-BARRE – Devon Schell's (Scarsdale, NY/) game-winning goal at 2:26 of overtime completed a furious comeback for the No. 12 Wilkes University men's ice hockey as it defeated visiting Nazareth College 4-3 in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) action from the Toyota SportsPlex on Saturday afternoon.

The Colonels improved to 12-4-0 overall and 8-1-0 in league play while Nazareth fell to 8-5-3 and 5-3-1.

The Golden Flyers scored 30 seconds into the third period to take a 3-1 lead, with the early score following a second period in which they scored two goals and outshot Wilkes 17-6.

Donald Flynn (Randolph, NJ/) started the comeback at 3:47 of the third with a power-play tally assisted by Nick Fea (Oak Ridge, NJ/) and Tyler Barrow (Massapequa, NY/), taking advantage of a cross-checking penalty on Nazareth just 56 seconds earlier.

The Colonels appeared to tie the game 5:47 of the third when Danny Reidel (Wayne, NJ) punched home a rebound, but the officials disallowed the goal due to goaltender interference.

Fea tied the score at 15:32 of the third with helpers from Dylan Kuipers (Andover, NJ/) and Michael Gurska (Revere, MA/).

The remainder of regulation passed without a goal, sending the contest into a five-on-five overtime, where Schell sent the fans home happy getting helpers from Phil Erickson (Eau Claire, WI/) and Barrow.

Barrow opened the scoring at 6:57 of the first period with a power-play goal assisted by Flynn and Gurska.

The Golden Flyers scored the next three goals at 00:28 of the second, 4:15 of the second, and the aforementioned 00:30 of the third, leading to the Colonel comeback effort.

Michael Paterson-Jones (Baldwinsville, NY) improved to 9-1-0 in his rookie season stopping 33 shots while Sean Kuhn made 32 saves between the pipes for Nazareth.

Wilkes returns to the ice on Friday when it travels to Lebanon Valley College for a 7:00 p.m. UCHC and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) game.
