Reidel Hat Trick, Power-Play Propels No. 13 Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey to 6-5 Overtime Victory at Manhattanville

RYE, N.Y. – The Wilkes University Colonels men's ice hockey team and the Manhattanville College Valiants needed extra time to decide their United Collegiate Hockey Conference battle Saturday afternoon.  The Colonels only needed 11 extra seconds to claim their 14th conference victory of the season.

The Colonels (18-5, 14-2 UCHC), ranked 13th in the latest USCHO.com poll, toppled their former Middle Atlantic Conference rival Valiants (9-13-2, 6-10-1 UCHC) 6-5 to keep pace in conference play.  Their two closest conference rivals, the Stevenson Mustangs and the no. 4 Utica Pioneers, are set to play tonight at Utica.

The goal horn remained quiet until late in the first period for both sides.  Sophomore forward Danny Reidel (Wayne, NJ) found the net for the first of his three goals on the evening, with sophomore forwards Tyler Barrow (Massapequa, NY/) and Joey Pasquini (Schenectady, NY/) assisting.  The Valiants hit the board for the first time before the period was out, but the Colonels replied with one of their three power-play goals on the evening.  Sophomore forward Donald Flynn (Randolph, NJ/) made it 2-1 with seven seconds left, with help from sophomore defender Michael Gurska (Revere, MA/) and sophomore forward Nick Fea (Oak Ridge, NJ/).

The Valiants struck first in the second, but junior forward Tyson Araujo (Oak Bluffs, MA/) continued his strong play from the night prior by netting a power play goal 13:53 into the period.  He was assisted by Flynn and Fea.  Manhattanville tied it up at three apiece heading into the third period.  Reidel struck again 2:13 into the third frame, with Gurska and freshman forward Billy Berry (Redding, CT) assisting.  Araujo followed that up with a power-play goal at 16:02, from Fea and Gurska.

The Valiants, still in the hunt for the conference playoffs, refused to quit.  They netted one goal at 16:47 to sit within striking distance of the Colonels.  A power-play, coupled with Manhattanville pulling their goaltender, allowed the Valiants to send the game to overtime with only 50 seconds left.  Reidel, with an assist from Barrow, only needed 11 ticks to send the Colonels home victorious in the extra period.

The Colonels outshot the Valiants 34-25.  Freshman goaltender Michael Paterson-Jones (Baldwinsville, NY) earned the victory while recording 20 saves on the evening.

Wilkes takes six days off before heading out for their final UCHC road swing of the season.  They play Nazareth next Friday at 7:00 p.m., before playing their regular season finale against Utica on February 22nd at 7:00 p.m.  The Colonels defeated Nazareth in overtime at home earlier this season and lost to Utica at the Toyota SportsPlex.
