Penalties Hamper No. 13 Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey in Loss at Nazareth

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The No. 13 Wilkes University men's ice hockey team was unable to overcome the numerous short-handed opportunities it put itself in on Friday evening, falling at Nazareth College by a 4-2 final in its penultimate regular-season United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) game.

The Colonels were called for 13 penalties totaling 61 penalty minutes, including a major and four misconducts, leading to eight short-handed instances which resulted in two power-play goals for the Golden Flyers.

Wilkes fell to 14-3-0 in league play and 18-6-0 overall. By virtue of Stevenson's 8-2 loss to Elmira, the Colonels can finish no lower than the second seed and are guaranteed a bye into the semifinals.

Wilkes opened the scoring at 2:04 of the first on a Tyson Araujo (Oak Bluffs, MA/) score assisted by Dylan Kuipers (Andover, NJ/).

Nazareth took the lead with back-to-back score on the power-play, the first at 4:21 of the second and the latter at 13:11 of the second.

Nick Fea (Oak Ridge, NJ/) tied the score at 2:36 of the third on a shot assisted by Donald Flynn (Randolph, NJ/) and Michael Gurska (Revere, MA/).

The Golden Flyers broke the tie at 8:46 of the third and added an empty-net score at 19:58 of the third.

Michael Paterson-Jones (Baldwinsville, NY) stopped 32 of 35 shots that he faced in the contest.

The Colonels close out the regular season with a trip to No. 3 Utica College; puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The winner of the game will claim the top seed and home-ice advantage in the upcoming UCHC tournament.
