Wilkes Men's Tennis Completes Play at the 2021 MAC Individual Championship

EDWARDSVILLE – Sophomore Cole Gibson (Pinecrest, FL/Miami Palmetto Senior) earned runner-up at No. 1 singles and teamed with senior Connor Murphy (Denver, PA/Cocalico) to place runner-up at No. 3 doubles as the Wilkes University men's tennis team completed action at the 2021 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Individual Championship on Sunday at the Kirby Park and the Ralston Athletic Complex tennis courts.

Gibson advanced to the finals of the No. 1 singles bracket with a semifinal victory over Ben Porto of Stevenson. The No. 2 seed took the match 6-3, 6-3. Gibson then battled with top seed Vivek Harinarayan of Stevens Institute of Technology in the final, eventually falling 3-6, 4-6. He finished with a 3-1 overall record to place runner-up.

Gibson and Murphy were victorious in their No. 3 doubles semifinal match as the second-seeded duo rolled to an 8-0 win over the third-seeded pair of Michael Schuetz and Will Harriger of Lebanon Valley. Top seed Sebastian Wroe and Troy Zhang of Stevens then forced Gibson and Murphy to settle for the runner-up finish as the Ducks pair won 8-2 in the final. Gibson and Murphy went 2-1 on the weekend.

Nathanial Rathe (Lincoln, NE/Lincoln Southeast) dropped his No. 3 singles semifinal match to second seed Lukas Sanidas of Stevenson 3-6, 3-6. The first year finished the two-day event 2-1 overall.

Second seed John Toussaint (Dallas, PA/Dallas Senior) lost his No. 4 singles semifinal to Jaden Bonta of Stevenson in a tight match. The sophomore slipped 4-6, 5-7 and finished the weekend with a 2-1 overall record.

First year Rodneil Senson (Richmond, TX/William B. Travis) fell 6-0, 6-2 to Matthew Emery of FDU-Florham in a No. 6 singles semifinal and finished 2-1 overall at the championship.

At No. 7 singles first year Connor Frey (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) completed his quarterfinal match that was suspended yesterday due to darkness as he had held a one-set lead. Frey advanced to the semifinals with a thrilling 4-3 (9-7), 2-4, 10-7 win. Brian Li of Stevens then defeated Frey 6-3, 6-1 to reach the final as Frey went 2-1 overall over the two days.

Overall, Stevens won 10 of the 11 titles including all four doubles titles. Harinarayan (No. 1), Matthew Luzzi (No. 2), Wroe (No. 3), Andrew He (No. 4), Olof Persson (No. 5), and Li (No. 7) were singles champions for the Ducks. Emery took the No. 6 singles title for FDU-Florham to break up the Stevens sweep.
