Colonels Notebook
• Wilkes wrestling is set to continue its road stretch of the 2022-2023 season with a dual match against Elizabethtown College at 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 18 at Thompson Gymnasium. The Colonels will also participate in the Dr. Sam Case Duals hosted by McDaniel College on Sunday, November 20 starting at 12:00 p.m as they compete against John Hopkins, Pittsburgh-Bradford, and McDaniel.
• Wilkes fell in its opening match against No. 21 TCNJ 30-9.
Cameron Butka (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) won his match at 184 in a 5-4 decision over Joe Daddario. The Colonels would then place 13th out of 14 teams at the Racich Rumble Tournament, having two top-6 finishers on the day.
Hunter Lowe (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill) at 197 and
Nevin Rauch (New Columbia, PA/Milton) at 285 each placed fourth.
• Butka had a 5-4 decision victory over Joe Daddario at the 197 contest against TCNJ, while
Cadden Kucek (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West) had a forfeit win early on in the match.
• National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) released their Division III Rankings for November 16th.
Austin Fashouer (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) still sits in the national rankings, filling the tenth spot at the 125 division as he is 3-2 on the year. Fashouer's two losses this season are to No. 7 Luke Hoerle of Stevens Institute of Technology and No. 9 Ryan Rosenthal of TCNJ.
• Butka was added to the national rankings this week, being No. 13 in the 197 weight class. Butka is 4-1 on the season, only losing to No. 3 Cam Farrow of York (Pa.)
• In the Southeast Regional Rankings,
James Geiger (Dallas, PA/Dallas) is now second at the 174 weight class, being 4-1 on the year, taking the 174-title at the Ned McGinley Invitational, only losing to TCNJ's Reid Colella, who is ranked No. 5 in the Mid-East Region.
Jack Bauer (Ringoes, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and
Caleb Burkhart (Hughesville, PA/Hughesville) are both ranked fifth in their respective weight classes in the Southeast Region. Bauer, who wrestles at the 141 division, won the weight class title at the Ned McGinley Invitational and is 4-1 on the year. His only loss came to TCNJ's Domenic DiFrancescantonio, who is No. 7 in the nation at 141. Burkhart is 3-2 on the season, placing second in the Ned McGinley Invitational. His only losses came to No. 12 Michael Dooley of Stevens and TCNJ's Peter Wersinger, who is second in the Mid-East Region.
• In the d3wrestle.com individual rankings that came out on November 9th, Fashouer is ranked seventh nationally at 125. Geiger and Butka were listed as Contenders and Bauer and Burkhart were listed as Honorable Mentions.
• Wilkes opened its season on November 5th placing third of 11 teams at the Ned McGinley Invitational hosted by King's. Bauer went 4-0 in taking the 141 pound title while Geiger won the 174 title. Seven other grapplers finished within the top-6, including three that placed second in their weight class.
• The Colonels 2022-2023 roster goes 34 deep with a class breakdown of: 5 seniors; 7 juniors; 11 sophomores; and 11 first-years.
• The roster features athletes from six states and one province: Pennsylvania – 18; New Jersey – 9; New York – 2; Virginia – 2; Maryland – 1; Louisiana - 1; Alberta – 1
• Elizabethtown has five people ranked in the Mid-East Rankings. Dorian Gonzalez and Brian Schneider are fourth at 157 and 165 respectively. Will Davis is sixth at 184, with Tyler Phenegar also placing sixth in the 197 division. Dylan Waller is the number one ranked wrestler in the Mid-East at 285, being nationally ranked 13th in the latest polls.
• In the Dr. Sam Case Duals, McDaniel will bring their ranked wrestlers which include: Alex Dufor (No. 4 in the Mid-East at 125), Thomas Monn (No. 4 in Mid-East & No. 13 in the nation at 149), Alex LaVeck (No. 6 in Mid-East at 165), Michael Bromley (No. 6 in Mid-East at 174), and Jaedyn Harris (No. 3 in Mid-East at 197).
