Lowe Wins Title for Wilkes Wrestling at Futures Mideast Tournament

ALLENTOWN, PA – Hunter Lowe (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill) won the 197-pound title for the Wilkes University wrestling team at the Futures Mideast Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg College on Sunday. The Colonels placed ninth of 15 teams with 51.5 points.

Lowe won his quarterfinal match with a 3-2 decision over Jakob Latham of Elizabethtown to move into the semifinals. There he pinned Chris Bold of Cortland in 54 seconds to move into the finals. Lowe then won the championship with an 11-0 major decision over John Sedovy of Washington and Lee. It is the first career tournament title for the sophomore who is now 19-12 on the season.

Dawson Tallant (Cape May, NJ/Middle Township) placed fourth in the same 197-pound bracket. After losing his first match, Tallant wrestled back with two wins. First with a fall over teammate Kevin Falcon (Whitehall, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) then a 15-0 technical fall over Cortland's Bold to move into the third-place match. Matt Majoy of Washington and Lee then defeated Tallant as he settled for fourth.

Nicholas Bauer (Coplay, PA/Wyoming Seminary) won his round of 16 bout at 125 pounds with a 12-1 major decision over Alden Prunoske of RIT then advanced to the semifinals with a 9-5 decision over Cortland's Justin Amendola.  Wilfred Jimenez of York (Pa.) then defeated Bauer with a 5-3 decision in the semifinals to go into the consolation semifinals. There he fell to Richard Munoz of Cortland who moved into the third-place bout.

Allen Kokilananda (Springfield, VA/Annandale) dropped his first bout but then wrestled back into the consolation semifinals with a 4-2 decision and a 6-5 decision. There he dropped an 8-1 decision to Cooper Johnson of Washington and Lee.

John Devito (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) won his round of 32 bout over Jackson Brandt of Ursinus with a 9-0 major decision. He then defeated teammate Christopher Nuss (Gore, VA/James Wood) in a competitive bout with an 11-7 decision in the round of 16. Devito then took a medical forfeit in the quarterfinals.

Cortland won the team title with 152.5 points as Stevens Institute of Technology took second with 127.5 points and the most champions with three.

Wilkes returns to the mat for the NCAA Southeast Regional on Friday and Saturday hosted by Lycoming College.
