Wilkes Basketball Begins 2023 MAC Freedom Slate at Stevens
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University men's and women's basketball teams are set to begin a stretch of 13 Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) games to close the regular season when the teams head to Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J. Wednesday night. The men's game opens the night at 6:00 p.m. with the women following at 8:00 p.m. inside Canavan Arena.

Men's Preview:
Wilkes enters the game with a 7-5 overall record and at 2-1 in MAC Freedom games. The Colonels are 2-3 on the road this season. Wilkes is coming off a 93-61 exhibition loss to the University of Pennsylvania at the historic Palestra on December 28th.
Drake Marshall (Gainesville, VA/Patriot) leads the Colonels in scoring with 14.4 points-per-game (ppg) which is good for seventh in the MAC Freedom.
Trent Fisher (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge), who has not played since December 7th is averaging 11.2 ppg and
Cayden Merrifield (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) is scoring 9.7 ppg.
Matthew Davidheiser (Reading, PA/Exeter Township),
Joey Zvorsky (New Cumberland, PA/Cedar Cliff), and
Jack Argento (Hershey, PA/Hershey) all are averaging 7.4 ppg.
Fisher is ninth in the conference with 6.6 rebounds-per-game (rpg) as he leads the Colonels. Marshall follows with 6.0 rpg which is 13th in the league. Merrifield is fifth in the MAC Freedom with 3.5 assists-per-game (apg) while Zvorsky is eighth with 3.1.
Davidheiser is currently the conference leader in three-point field goal percentage as he is shooting .500 (19-for-38). Merrifield is fourth in the statistic at .434 (23-for-53) with his 23 makes ranking fifth. Fisher is fourth in the conference with a .611 field goal percentage and ninth with 1.1 blocks-per-game (bpg). Merrifield leads Wilkes and is eighth in the league with 1.4 steals-per-game (spg). Marshall is currently fourth with a .833 (20-for-24) free throw percentage.
Wilkes is fourth in the MAC Freedom in scoring offense with 70.8 ppg while ranking first in scoring defense at 61.8 ppg which is all 23rd overall out of 413 Division III teams currently.
Stevens enters with a 6-6 overall record and at 3-0 in its opening MAC Freedom games. The Ducks are 3-2 at home this season. Stevens dropped the Championship game of the Stevens Holiday Tournament to No. 15 Wheaton (Ill.) 74-55 on Friday, December 30.
Jack Spellman leads Stevens with 14.5 ppg which is sixth in the conference and 10.4 rpg which is second. Spellman leads the MAC Freedom with 43 total blocks (3.6 per-game).
Mike Goodall is second on the team and 13th in the league with 13.5 ppg. Matt Leming (8.8 ppg) and Conor Coffey (81.ppg) are third and fourth in scoring for the Ducks.
Coffey is second in the conference with 3.8 apg and Goodall is third in steals with 1.8 per-game. Leming ranks third in the league with a .442 (23-for-52) three-point shooting percentage and his 2.6 made threes per-game is first in the conference.
Stevens is eighth in the MAC Freedom in scoring offense at 62.8 ppg and the Ducks rank second in scoring defense with 64.0 ppg.
The Ducks lead the series 4-3 dating back to the 2019-20 season including three victories last year over the Colonels.
Women's Preview:
Wilkes enters with a 3-9 overall record and with a 2-1 mark in its first three MAC Freedom games. The Colonels are 1-3 on the road this season. Wilkes is coming off two losses on its trip to Massachusetts to play in the Naismith Classic including a 60-30 loss to No. 13 Springfield College on Saturday.
Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) leads the Colonels in scoring with 10.4 ppg which is 13th in the MAC Freedom.
Brenna Babcock (Sweet Valley, PA/Northwest Area) is second on the team with 6.5 ppg and
Brianna Horton (Verona, NJ/Verona) is third with 5.8 ppg.
Matos also leads Wilkes in rebounding with 4.9 rpg. Babcock is second with 4.6 and Horton is third with 4.4.
Julia Marino (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township) is fourth in the MAC Freedom with 2.9 apg and she has totaled 35 for the season.
Marino and Matos are tied for the team lead with 26 steals and are eighth in the conference with 2.2 spg.
Erin Shober (Reading, PA/Wilson) is seventh in the league with 1.2 bpg with 14 total blocks this season. Horton is eighth in the MAC Freedom with 16 made threes.
Wilkes is seventh in the MAC Freedom in scoring offense at 52.3 ppg and fifth in scoring defense at 58.3 ppg.
Stevens, ranked No. 22 in the this week's WBCA Top 25 Poll, is 10-2 overall and 3-0 in the MAC Freedom. Stevens is 5-1 at home this season including a 73-46 win over George Fox University on Friday.
Elissa Nsenkyire leads the Ducks and is second in the conference with 15.2 ppg. Jess Broad is right behind her with 14.8 ppg. Leyla Castro (9.8), Danielle Cornetta (9.0), and Lucy Alberici (8.3) follow for Stevens in the scoring column.
Amber Porrett leads the conference with 9.2 rpg while Cornetta at 6.2 and Broad with 6.0 follow on the glass. Castro is tied for the MAC Freedom lead with 3.0 apg.
Broad is third in the league with 1.9 bpg and is tied for the team lead with 1.8 spg with Cornetta. Broad ranks fourth in the conference with a .493 field goal shooting percentage while Nsenkyire and Cornetta also rank in the top 10. Nsenkyire leads the team with 15 threes.
Stevens is second in the MAC Freedom with 71.9 ppg on offense and fourth in scoring defense with 54.9 ppg.
The Ducks lead the series 3-1 dating back to the 2019-20 season. The two teams split the series last year with Stevens winning at the Marts Center 76-51 on January 15th before the Colonels won at Canavan Arena 50-47 on February 19th.
