Wilkes Basketball Travels to FDU-Florham for Conference Play

WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's and men's basketball teams will head on the road this Saturday as they face Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) competitor FDU-Florham in afternoon action. The women's game will begin action as tip-off for that game will be at 1:00 p.m. with the men following afterwards at 3:00 p.m.

Women's Preview: 
Wilkes comes into the game with a 5-15 record on the season, holding a 4-7 conference record in the MAC Freedom this season. Wilkes is 2-6 on the road this year, winning their last road contest against Lycoming College 54-51 on January 26. The Colonels won their last matchup FDU-Florham 84-20 on December 7, as the Colonels had three players score in double digits against the Devils that day as they scored their most points for and allowed their lowest point total in the same game.

Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) leads the Colonels in scoring with 8.9 points-per-game (ppg), which is for 17th in the MAC Freedom. Brenna Babcock (Sweet Valley, PA/Northwest Area) is second on the team with 7.0 ppg and Brianna Horton (Verona, NJ/Verona) is third with 5.6 ppg.

Matos leads Wilkes with 4.4 rebounds-per-game (rpg). Babcock is second with 4.2 rpg while Horton is third with 3.8. Julia Marino (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township) is tied for sixth in the MAC Freedom with 2.8 assists-per-game (apg), totaling 55 on the season.

Marino leads Wilkes with 43 steals, tied for sixth in the conference with 2.3 steals-per-game (spg). Matos follows behind with 36 steals and is tied for 12th in the MAC Freedom with 1.9 spg. Erin Shober (Reading, PA/Wilson) is seventh in the league with 1.1 blocks-per-game (bpg) with 21 total blocks this season.

Babcock leads the Colonels with a 39.5 field goal percentage while Horton is tied for ninth in the conference with 1.2 threes-per-game, shooting .289 from beyond the arc.
   
Wilkes is seventh in the MAC Freedom in scoring offense at 50.5 ppg and fifth in scoring defense at 59.3 ppg.

FDU-Florham is 0-16 on the season and 0-12 in the conference. The Devils have not won a home game this season, losing their last contest to a visiting team on January 25 when they lost to Arcadia University 59-37. FDU-Florham dropped their last matchup to No. 18 Stevens Institute of Technology 73-46 on Wednesday night.

Abigail Rodriguez leads FDU-Florham with 15.3 ppg, ranking second in the MAC Freedom. Isabella Torrado is second on the team with 8.7 ppg while Lindsey Welsh follows behind on the Devils with 4.9 ppg.

Whitney Shyposh is sixth in the MAC Freedom in rebounds with 8.1 rpg while Nour Elsayyid follows behind with 6.3 rpg. Rodriguez is tied for fourth in the conference with 2.9 apg while being tied for 16th with 1.6 spg.

Rodriguez leads the team with a 25.2 field goal percentage. Isabella Torrado has made 13 of her 66 three point attempts, giving her a .197 shooting percentage from beyond the arc.

FDU-Florham is ninth in the MAC Freedom in scoring offense with 32.4 ppg and in scoring defense at 78.1 ppg.

The Devils lead the series with a 17-7 record dating back to the 2010-11 season.
 
Men's Preview:
Wilkes comes into the contest with a 10-10 overall record and 5-6 in MAC Freedom play. Wilkes enters the game going 4-5 on the road this year, winning two of their last three match road matchups. The Colonels won their last contest to FDU-Florham 81-61 when they hosted the Devils on December 10.

Drake Marshall (Gainesville, VA/Patriot) leads the Colonels in scoring with 12.6 ppg which puts him 11th in the MAC Freedom with Trent Fisher (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) following behind on the team and in conference with 12.5 ppg. Cayden Merrifield (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) is third on the team as he averages 10.7 ppg. Lucas Lesko (Northampton, PA/Northampton) and Joey Zvorsky (New Cumberland, PA/Cedar Cliff) round out the Colonels scorers with 8.9 and 7.5 respectively.

Fisher is fifth in the conference with 7.4 rpg as he leads the Colonels in that category. Marshall follows with 5.9 rpg which is 11th in the league. Merrifield is fifth in the MAC Freedom with 3.4 apg while Zvorsky is tied for 10th with 2.9 apg.

Matthew Davidheiser (Reading, PA/Exeter Township) is currently shooting 45.5% in three-point field goals, which leads the MAC Freedom conference. Merrifield is in seventh place in the MAC Freedom with 40.4% from beyond the arc. Fisher is third in the conference with a .567 field goal percentage and fifth with 1.5 bpg. Merrifield is tied for seventh in the conference with 1.4 spg while Zvorsky is tied for ninth with 1.3 spg and Fisher is tied for 13th with 1.1 spg.

Wilkes is fourth in the MAC Freedom in scoring offense with 69.8 ppg while ranking second in scoring defense at 63.9 ppg, which is tied for 30th overall out of 413 Division III teams currently.

FDU-Florham enters with an 3-18 overall record this season with a 2-10 conference record. The Devils are 1-9 at home this year, losing their last two contests inside the Ferguson Recreation Center. FDU-Florham lost their last game against Stevens 64-57.

Matthew Johnson leads FDU-Florham with 14.9 ppg, sitting third in the conference in that category. Carson Woods is second on the team with 11.5 ppg, ranking 14th in the MAC Freedom. Jamal Santana and Michael Dabas round out the scoring with 10.1 ppg and 8.5 ppg respectively.

Brian Nichols is tied for 12th in the MAC Freedom with 5.4 rpg while Johnson averages 5.4 rpg. Carson Woods is tied for seventh in MAC Freedom with 3.0 apg as he has 62 assists on the season. Woods is tied for fifth in the conference with a 1.5 spg while Johnson leads the team with 0.7 rpg.

Michael Dabas leads the team in field goal percentage, shooting 48.8% from the field, ranking 10th in the conference, while Nichols holds a .382 three-point percentage, making 38-of-116 threes.

FDU-Florham is ninth in the MAC Freedom in scoring offense with 59.2 ppg and seventh in scoring defense with 70.7 ppg.

The Colonels lead the series 15-8 dating back to the 2010-11 season.
