No. 19 Wilkes Men's Wrestling Finishes in First Place at Blue Jay Classic; Four Colonels Capture Titles
 
ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – The No. 19 Wilkes men's wrestling team crown four champions on way to first place at the Blue Jay Classic hosted by Elizabethtown College Saturday afternoon.

Wilkes took home the team title with a team score of 194. Penn College placed second with a score of 132 while host Elizabethtown followed in third place with a team score of 131.
 
Ryan Santiago (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) was the first Colonels champion going 4-0 at 141-pounds. He began the tournament with a back-to-back technical falls to move into the semifinals. There Santiago used a fall in 4:12 before another pin (5:17) in the finals over Dom Vinci of SUNY Cortland to capture the title.
 
Jaryn Hartranft (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua) claimed the title at 157-pounds using two consecutive falls in 1:54 and 1:10 respectively to reach the semifinals. He took a 13-6 decision in the semifinals before earning a hard-fought 4-3 decision over McDaniel's Xavier Howard in the finals.
 
At 174-pounds, Melquan Warren (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) continued his hot start to the season winning the championship after going 5-0 with four extra-point wins. Warren began the tournament with a fall, major decision and another fall to reach the semifinals. There he continued his pinning ways with another fall in 1:40 before taking a thrilling 12-11 decision over Braden Galassi of Davis and Elkins.
 
Cameron Butka (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) was the final Wilkes champion claiming the crown at 197-pounds, his third title in tournament competition this season. Butka used a fall and technical fall to reach the semifinals before winning 7-1 to reach the final bout. There Butka won 4-3 over Will Davis of Elizabethtown.
 
Caleb Burkhart (Hughesville, PA/Hughesville) finished second at 285-pounds while reaching a career milestone in the process. Burkhart began the day with a major decision and followed with a technical fall to reach the semifinals. He then recorded his team-best 10th fall of the year while also reaching the 100-win plateau of his career to reach the finals. In the finals Burkhart fell 9-2 to Ferrum's Rayshawn Dixon to settle for runner-up.
 
Christopher Nuss (Gore, VA/James Wood) was another second place finisher for Wilkes finishing runner-up at 184-pounds. He wrestled to three straight extra-point victories including two major decisions and a fall to reach the finals. Nuss then ended his tournament run with an injury default in the finals.
 
Caden Kucek was the final second place finisher for Wilkes taking runner-up at 125-pounds. Kucek began the run with a fall(3:59) followed by a technical fall and major decision to reach the finals. He was pinned in the finals by Ferrum's Zach Beckner to settle for second.
 
Other Wilkes finishers included Caleb Lawrence (Larksville, PA/Wyoming Seminary) (4th at 165-pounds), Lucas Miller (Kempton, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) (4th at 174-pounds), Omari Watson (Clayton, NJ/Clayton) (5th at 174-pounds) and Trevor Gitski (Alburtis, PA/Emmaus) (6th at 285-pounds).
 
Wilkes remains idle until Friday, December 20th when the Colonels host the 91st annual Wilkes Open at 9:00 a.m. in the Marts Center.
