Both Wilkes University Tennis Teams Win 5-2 Over Marywood

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes University tennis teams defeated the Marywood University Pacers 5-2 in both matches on Thursday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex.

In the double matches, Cole Riley (Louisville, KY/Xavier) and Sebastian Sylvester (Diego Martin, Trinidad and Tobago/The College of Lady Fatima) earned a 6-2 win at No. 1, while Otarhe Okoh (Shakopee, MN/Shakopee) and Landon Gleichauf (Naples, NY/Naples) won 6-4 at No. 2. The final doubles match saw Xavier Bleiler (Mountain Top, PA/MMI Prep) and Cole Larcinese (King of Prussia, PA/Methacton) fall just short 6-3.

In six singles matches, the Colonels won four of them. Bleiler won 2-0 (6-1, 6-4) at No. 2, Sylvester won 2-0 (6-1, 6-2) at No. 3, Okoh won 2-0 (6-2, 6-1) at No. 3, and Gleichauf the last winner 2-0 (6-2, 6-0) at No. 4. 

The women's team also won four of their six singles matches, but this time swept the doubles matches against the Pacers. Ana Savkovic (Belgrade, Serbia/The Hoosac School) and Julia Spaeth (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg Area) won 6-0 at No. 1, Ava Vacula (Exeter, PA/Wyoming Area Secondary Center) and Isabel Schreffler (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) earned a 6-4 win at No. 2, and then Kensington Edmond (Mount Joy, PA/Donegal) and Wanda Owens (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) rounded out the doubles matches with a 6-1 win at No. 3.

For the singles matches, Savkovic won 2-0 (6-1, 6-0) at No. 1, Spaeth won 2-0 (6-2, 7-6 (5)) at No. 2, Edmond won her match 2-0 (6-2, 6-4) at No. 4, and Vacula finished off the singles matches with a 2-0 (6-2, 6-1) win at No. 6.

Both teams wrap up their fall season on Sunday, Oct. 19 with the Wilkes Doubles Invitational at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
