Twelve Wilkes Student-Athletes Named to 2024-25 CSC Academic All-District® At-Large Teams
WILKES-BARRE – Twelve Wilkes University student-athletes representing seven teams were named to the 2024-25 Men's and Women's Academic All-District® At-Large Teams by College Sports Communicators (CSC), as announced by the organization on Tuesday afternoon.
Joe Johnson (Midland, MI),
Jack Perna (Sykesville, MD),
Aidan Hunter (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson),
Jacob Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central),
Cameron Butka (Scranton, PA/West Scranton), and
Austin Sosnovik (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) were named to the men's team, representing Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey, Men's Volleyball, Men's Wrestling, and Men's Lacrosse.
Morgan Millard (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg Area),
Morgan Hermanofski (Shickshinny, PA/Northwest Area),
Sarah Eliff (Owings, MD/Northern),
Chayce Hyndman (Mountain, ON),
Iida Laitinen (Jyväskylä, Finland), and
Lily Zingaro (Collingwood, ON) were the six named to the women's team, representing Wilkes Field Hockey, Women's Lacrosse, and Women's Ice Hockey.
To be considered for the Academic All-District® At-Large teams, student-athletes must be at least sophomore athletic and academic status, have played in 90% or started 66% of contests, and a 3.50 or higher cumulative GPA.
Johnson and Perna each earned All-MAC honors this season for their play on the ice and were named to the All-MAC Second Team and First Team respectively. Johnson was also named the 2024-25 Wilkes University Scholar-Athlete of the Year, finishing his final semester with a 4.0 GPA and graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering. Perna, who also graduated last month, finished his collegiate career with a 3.97 GPA and a degree in mechanical engineering as well.
Hunter and Mages represented Wilkes men's volleyball, with Hunter playing in 28 games and starting in 20, while Mages started all 29 matches and led the team with 70 total blocks. Hunter finished the year with a GPA of 3.97 while pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering. Mages graduated in the spring with a GPA of 3.93, earning a degree in accounting.
Butka shined on the mat and in the classroom, finishing his collegiate career as an NCAA Finalist at 197 lbs. and staking claim to the career wins record with 137 victories. Butka was named the 2024-25 Wilkes University Athlete of the Year and earned his degree in biochemistry this spring with a 3.86 GPA.
Sosnovik broke records for the Colonels in his second season, putting his name at the top of the record book for single-season and single-game assists with 49 and nine respectively. In the classroom, the sophomore finished with a 3.80 GPA while pursuing a marketing degree.
Millard and Hermanofski each played in all 18 games for Wilkes field hockey in the fall, with Hermanofski leading the team in goals and assists with five each. Millard finished her collegiate career with a 3.82 GPA and a degree in political science, while Hermanofski earned a 3.71 GPA towards a degree in nursing.
Eliff pulled double duty in her senior year, earning Academic All-District® honors for women's soccer in the fall and now the women's lacrosse team. Eliff started 11 games for the Colonels and earned her mechanical engineering degree with a 3.82 GPA.
Hyndman, Laitinen, and Zingaro were all key parts of the women's ice hockey team's historic campaign that culminated in a record 25 wins, the first ever MAC women's ice hockey championship, and the team's first NCAA Tournament berth. The trio finished with a 3.68, 3.58, and 3.58 GPA respectively, pursuing degrees in psychology, business administration, and marketing.
In addition to being named Academic All-District®, Johnson and Butka have been selected as CSC Academic All-America® finalists. They advance to the national ballot to be voted on by CSC members. At-Large Academic All-America® first-, second- and third- team honorees will be announced on Tuesday, July 8.
