READING – The Wilkes University women's tennis team continues to post victories, this time a 6-3 win over Albright to improve to 9-0 overall and 7-0 in Freedom Conference play.
The Lions jumped out to an early lead after the doubles competition by winning two of three matches. At No. 1 doubles,
Victoria Bybel (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) and
Rebekah Shanaman (Richland, Pa./ELCO) took an 8-2 win over Marissa Cooperman and Stacey Bantton at the No. 1 spot. Lisa Archibald and Ashley Woodcock tied the match at one with a 9-8 (7-3) win at the No. 2 position.
The Lady Colonels were not able to carry enough players to complete the doubles competition and one spot in singles play due to class conflicts, so the Lions were able to take the lead with a win at the No. 3 spot.
In singles play, Wilkes'
Lauren Donmoyer (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) tied the match at two with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Brittany Herbert at the No. 5 position before Shanaman won her match over Bantton, 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot to give the Lady Colonels the lead for good.
Victoria Bybel (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) made it 4-2 with a 6-0, 6-0 straight-set win over Cooperman at the No. 1 spot, while
Stephanie Harkins (Larksville, Pa./Holy Redeemer) defeated Woodcock, 6-1, 6-1.
Xiaoqiao Zhang (Zhengzhou City, China/Warren Hills (N.J.)), playing at the No. 2 spot won the final match, 6-2, 6-3 over Lisa Archibald.
Wilkes will remain in action tomorrow when it heads to DeSales to take on the Bulldogs at 6 p.m.
