LANDISVILLE – The Wilkes University women's tennis team entered the first day of the Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Championships by winning each of its singles and doubles matches.
Each of the Wilkes players received a bye in singles play, advancing to the quarterfinals. At No. 1 singles,
Victoria Bybel (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) defeated Rebekkah Roland of Eastern, 6-3, 6-0. At No. 2 singles,
Xiaoqiao Zhang (Zhengzhou City, China/Warren Hills (N.J.)) defeated Lisa Archibald, 6-2, 6-3, while
Alison McDonald (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) took down Maura Haupt of Misericordia, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
Kristin Wilt (Milton, Pa./Milton), playing at the No. 4 position, took a 6-3, 6-0 win over Eastern's Allsion Verdic.
Michelle Knight (Washington, Pa./Trinity) won her match over Alyssa Neill of Elizabethtown, 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 5 slot, while
Katie Buckley (Danville, Pa./Danville), playing at the No. 6 spot, beat Jess Souchik of Lycoming, 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles play, the No. 1 tandem of McDonald and Zhang defeated Stacy Clark and Christie McGinley of Messiah, 8-0 in the opening round match before taking down Rebekkah Roland and Hannah Tobin of Eastern, 8-4. At No. 2 doubles, Bybel and Wilt defeated Cory Mazen and Kate Wiseman of Arcadia, 8-2 in the quarterfinals.
At the No. 3 spot, Knight and
Rebekah Shanaman (Richland, Pa./ELCO) advanced to the quarterfinals after a bye and defeated Souchik and Katie Walker of Lycoming, 8-2.
