The Wilkes University women's tennis team remained undefeated with an 8-1 win over Misericordia, handing the Cougars just their second loss of the season.
The win improved the Lady Colonels to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in Freedom Conference play.
Victoria Bybel (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) and
Kristin Wilt (Milton, Pa./Milton) gave Wilkes a 1-0 lead with an 8-1 doubles win over Maura Haupt and Courtney Otto at the No. 2 spot.
Michelle Knight (Washington, Pa./Trinity) and
Rebekah Shanaman (Richland, Pa./ELCO) quickly made it 2-0 with an 8-2 win over Sarah Golis and Jennifer Spott at the No. 3 spot.
The Cougars tallied their only point at the No. 1 doubles when Abby Searfoss and Ashley Mangabang took a 9-8 (8-6) win over
Alison McDonald (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) and
Xiaoqiao Zhang (Zhengzhou City, China/Warren Hills (N.J.)).
In singles play,
Katie Buckley (Danville, Pa./Danville) made it 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lauren Verret at the No. 6 spot, while Wilt gave Wilkes a 4-1 advantage with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Otto at the No. 4 position.
Knight clinched the match for the Lady Colonels at the No. 5 spot with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Golis before Zhang easily won her match over Mangabang at the No. 2 position.
“We knew coming in they would be a tough team,” head coach
Chris Leicht said. “They were undefeated in conference, but we approached the match the same way we do all the others.”
Wilkes will be back in action Wednesday when they travel across town to face King's College.
