Coming into the game against King's College,
Amanda Peters (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) only had one goal credited to her name, but that all changed when she led the Lady Colonels to a 4-3 overtime win over King's to secure the No. 1 seed in the Freedom Conference Championship.
Peters scored three goals, including the game-winner with 14 seconds to go in the overtime period, recording the first hat-trick of her collegiate career. The win moves Wilkes to 16-2 overall and 7-1 in Freedom Conference play and will await the winner between King's and FDU-Florham for an afternoon game on Wednesday.
The Lady Colonels dominated most of the first half, controlling the ball on offense for the first 20 minutes of the game. Peters gave Wilkes an early 1-0 lead with a goal at the 3:51 mark off a pass from
Alyson Paulauskas (Shavertown, Pa./Lake-Lehman). She would later make it 2-0 with a score past goal keeper Erin McGinley just under 12 minutes into the game.
Despite playing from behind, Kings' offense dominated the final 15 minutes of the first half and eventually cut the Lady Colonel lead in half when Danielle Terracciano played the ball in to Debbie Wychock on a penalty corner, who then passed across to Christina Glenn for the Monarchs first goal of the game. Glenn's score came just inside the circle as she rifled a shot that went past two Wilkes defenders as well as goal keeper
Lindsey Davenport (Dallas, Pa./Dallas).
The Lady Colonels would take a 2-1 lead into halftime, but King's continued its offensive surge in the second. A barrage of shots by the Monarchs eventually led to a goal by Jenera Quinones, who tied the game at the 37:51 mark. “King's is known for their attack,” head coach
Sara Myers said. “They are very aggressively offensively and it showed today.”
The ball stayed on Wilkes' side of the field for the majority of the second half and the Monarchs took advantage as Shawna Walp gave King's a 3-2 lead 56 minutes into the game with an assist from Glenn. The Monarchs would hold the lead until
Erica Sundberg (Mullica Hill, N.J./Kingsway) scored her first goal of the season to tie the game at the 59 minute mark.
“We created some great opportunities today. We really tried to use our small passing game and make smarter decisions and I think that really paid off for us,” Myers said.
Both teams went back and fourth the entire game as Wilkes finished with 15 total shots including nine on goal, while King's had 14 shots and eight on goal. The Lady Colonels had nine penalty corners, while the Monarchs had eight and both goal keepers had five saves.
With the No. 1 seed, Wilkes will have home field advantage throughout the Freedom Conference Tournament. “This was a great win for our seniors. They deserve to play their playoff games at home,” Myers said.
