For the second time in three days, the No. 18 Lady Colonels field hockey team came away with a win over King's College as Alyssa Koncelik (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip)'s goal at the 45-minute mark gave Wilkes a 1-0 win in the Freedom Conference Championship semifinals.

The win marks the first time in nine years Wilkes has advanced to the Freedom Conference finals after winning the MAC Championship in 1999. In the past two seasons, King's has represented the Freedom Conference in the NCAA playoffs with back-to-back league titles.

The Lady Colonel defense stepped up to the challenge, handing the Monarchs their second shutout this season as King's ends its season with a 15-5 record. “Our defense was much more composed and made smart decisions,” head coach Sara Myers said. “They really kept us in the game.”

King's controlled the tempo early, but was only able to get two shots off in the first half. Once the Lady Colonel offense found its rhythm, they were able to threaten several times, including back-to-back shots on goal with under 10 minutes to play in the first half. Monarch goal keeper Erin McGinley had three saves in the game, while Lindsey Davenport (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) had three as well.

The two teams played to a 0-0 first half before Koncelik scored her sixth game-winning goal of the season. “Alyssa has been key for us all season. She is one of the reasons why we are in the position and it is fitting that she came through once again,” Myers said.

Wilkes will now host Eastern in the Freedom Conference Championship Saturday at a time to be determined at Artillery Park in Kingston. The No. 2 seeded Eastern had an easy 6-0 win over Misericordia earlier today. The win improved Wilkes to 17-2 overall and have now won seven of its last nine games.

The Lady Colonels took a 2-1 win over Eastern in their first meeting this season.
