Box Score
The Wilkes University field hockey team scored early and often as the Lady Colonels breezed past Keystone, 8-1. They are now 7-0, which marks the best start in school history.
The previous best start came in 1991 when the Lady Colonels went 4-0 to start the season.
All 22 field players saw action in a win that saw Wilkes score a season-high for goals scored, shots on goal (20) and total shots (25). Keystone, a first-year field hockey program, had just one shot on goal, but made it count as Nicole Macedonio scored the Giants lone goal.
Five different players scored for Wilkes, including two goals each from
Alyssa Koncelik (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) and
Devon McKay (Secane, Pa./Christian Academy).
Chelsea Minix (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway) started the scoring for the Lady Colonels just eight minutes into the game on a pass from
Amanda Peters (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua).
Koncelik scored her first goal of the game just under eight minutes later on a pass from Minix to make it 2-0 before
Jennifer Keegan (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley) scored her second goal of the season to make it 3-0. Macedonio scored for Keystone to make it 3-1 before
Alyson Paulauskas (Shavertown, Pa./Lake-Lehman) scored her third goal of the season to close out the scoring in the first half.
With a 4-1 lead to start the second half, head coach
Sara Myers used the opportunity to play her non-starters most of the second half. “All of our field players had a chance to play today which was nice to give them some experience.”
The two-goal performance by Koncelik marks the second time she has scored more than once and has now scored in all but one game this season. Koncelik and McKay are the only Wilkes players that have multiple goal games this season.
Freshman goalkeeper
Caitlin Jordan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) recorded the first start and win of her collegiate career and after seven games thus far, the Lady Colonels have given up just four goals.
Wilkes will be back in action Thursday when it heads to Scranton to face the Royals at 4 p.m.
