Box Score
For the second time in as many games, the Wilkes University field hockey team won their match in strokes, defeating Susquehanna 1-0.
Freshman goalie
Lindsey Davenport (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) was solid in the cage, blocking all but one penalty stroke in the win. “Lindsey played a really great game,” head coach
Sara Myers said. “She had some amazing saves and came through for us once again in overtime.”
The Lady Colonels (2-0) had 35 total shots with 20 shots on goal, but were unable to score in regulation. “We need to work on finishing. We played well, we just need to find a way to find the back of the cage,” Myers said.
In the shootout period,
Devon McKay (Secane, Pa./Christian Academy) put the Lady Colonels on the board first with a goal, but Susquehanna's Jenelle Anthony tied the match with a goal of her own. Davenport would not let another goal after that.
Brittany Sines (Afton, N.Y./Afton Central) put Wilkes up for good with a goal in its second attempt, followed by a goal from
Alyssa Davis (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood).
Alyson Paulauskas (Shavertown, Pa./Lake-Lehman) finished out the scoring for the Lady Colonels, giving them a 4-1 advantage in the shootout period. “I think watching them play today is the best I have seen us play in my three years at Wilkes,” Myers said.
While Wilkes' offense was threatening most of the game, the Crusaders had just 14 total shots, including seven shots on goal.
The Lady Colonels will remain on the road when they head to Scranton to take on Marywood on Saturday at 1 p.m.
