DALLAS, Pa. – Julissa Reed (Coal Township, Pa./Shamokin)'s goal in the 19
th minute proved to be enough as Wilkes took a 1-0 win over Smith in the second game of the Colonel Classic. The win makes it two-straight for the Lady Colonels.
Reed was in the right place at the right time as she knocked in
Taryn Hallowell (Belvidere, N.J./Belvidere)'s shot that hit the post. The score came after a flurry of shots starting with an attempt by Reed that was blocked by Smith goal keeper Lauren Bachtel. Hallowell then fired a shot just inside the penalty box that hit off the right post before Reed was there to knock it in.
The Lady Colonels pressured Smith nearly the entire game, getting 23 shots off, including eight on goal. Hallowell, who was named to the Colonel Classic All-Tournament Team, had seven total shots and two shots on goal.
Reed, who was also named to the all-tournament team, now has a team-high four goals, two of which came at the St. Lawrence Tournament.
“This was a confidence booster for us,” head coach
John Sumoski said. “Our defense played very well together. I think they dropped off well and prevented them from getting behind us.”
Smith had just one shot on goal, which came off a direct kick just outside the penalty box in the first half.
Along with Hallowell and Reed, center midfielder Samantha Elston was also named to the all-tournament team.
“We developed many dangerous scoring opportunities that we hope to capitalize on in the future,” Sumoski said. The Lady Colonels will have that opportunity Wednesday night when they travel to face Scranton at 7 p.m.
