Box Score
Delaware Valley hit 11 three-pointers and shot nearly 50 percent from the field, giving the Aggies an 81-75 win over the Colonels. The win marks the first time Delaware Valley has won in the Marts Center since 1977.
James Jones, the league's leading scorer, finished with 27 points and was one of three Delaware Valley players to finish in double-figures. Chris Mayo chipped in with 17 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. For the Colonels,
Chris DeRojas (Kingston, Pa./Bishop O'Reilly) led the way with 20 points, while three others finished in double-digits. Freshman
Paul Huch (Tuckerton, N.J./Pinelands Regional) tied a career-high with 10 points and seven rebounds and blocked a game-high three shots.
Wilkes started out slow, missing its first nine field goal attempts before DeRojas drained a three-pointer with 13:17 to go in the first. His bucket snapped a 14-4 run by the Aggies, pulling the Colonels within seven (14-7). Prior to DeRojas' three,
Tom Kresge (Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) and
Kendall Hinze (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) both drained a pair of free throws.
Delaware Valley would later use an 8-2 to lead by 10 (24-14) with 8:25 to go in the first after Jones hit a three-pointer from the left side. Wilkes would storm back with a 16-3 run of its own to take its first lead of the half after Huch hit one of his two three-pointers on the day giving the Colonels a 30-27 advantage. Jones scored the last bucket of the half with 42 seconds to play, giving Delaware Valley a 32-30 lead at the break.
Both teams exchanged buckets in the second half until a 6-0 run by the Aggies gave them a 51-42 lead with 13:11 to go after Jones converted a layup. Delaware Valley would eventually take a 58-47 advantage, its largest of the half, after Jason Goldheimer made a layup with 10:17 to go. Wilkes would pull within five (63-58) after
Steve Kline (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) hit a jumper in the paint with just under five minutes to play, but it would come no closer the rest of the way.
Delaware Valley made just two field goals over the final 4:31 of the game, but countered its poor shooting by hitting 14 of their 20 free throws in the game during that span.
The loss drops the Colonels to 10-8 overall and 6-5 in Freedom Conference play. They will hit the road to take on league-leading DeSales in Center Valley on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
