Box Score

The Wilkes University women's tennis team was without two of its normal members in the singles lineup, but it didn't matter as the Lady Colonels swept Eastern 9-0 to improve to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in Freedom Conference play.

Xiaoqiao Zhang (Zhengzhou City, China/Warren Hills (N.J.)) and Michelle Knight (Roaming Shores, OH/Trinity) were out of the lineup, but Rebekah Shanaman (Richland, PA/ELCO) and freshman Rachel Zomerfeld filled in nicely as they both won their matches in straight-sets. Zomerfeld, playing in her first collegiate match, was impressive as she defeated Amanda Prescott 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot. Zomerfeld's victory gave the Lady Colonels a 7-0 advantage and was one of two players to not lose a game.

Shanaman was nearly as impressive as she took down Jennifer Wright at the No. 5 spot, 6-1, 6-0 which clinched the victory for Wilkes.

In doubles play, Shanaman and Nathalie Kocon gave the Lady Colonels a 1-0 lead after their 8-0 win over Jacquelyn Sauder and Prescott. Alexis Donner (Belmar, NJ/Wall) and Anna Mitchell (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) quickly made it 2-0 after taking down Allison Verdic and Wright 8-0 at the No. 2 position. The freshman tandem of Melanie Nolt (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and Katie Lynn (Berwick, PA/Berwick) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-1 win over Bekah Roland and Hannah Tobin at the top spot.

Holding a 3-0 lead after doubles play, Donner was the first to finish her match as she defeated Verdic 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot. Donner is now 10-0 in singles play this season.

After Shanaman made it 5-0 with her win, Nolt defeated Roland, her high school teammate 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 position before Zomerfeld won her match. Lynn won her match 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot before Mitchell completed the singles sweep with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Sauder at the No. 4 spot.

The Lady Colonels won't have much rest as they will head to Madison, N.J. to take on FDU-Florham tomorrow afternoon.
