The Wilkes University women's team clinched the No. 1 seed in the Freedom Conference Tournament to be played in April with a 9-0 sweep over King's College.
Both teams came into the match undefeated in league play, but the Lady Colonels dominated by sweeping the doubles competition before winning all six singles matches in straight-sets.
Michelle Knight (Roaming Shores, OH/Trinity) and
Rebekah Shanaman (Richland, PA/ELCO) put the Lady Colonels on the board after beating Rachel Hoffnagle and Jennifer Bader 8-0 at the No. 3 spot. The freshmen tandem of
Melanie Nolt (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and Katrina Lynn quickly made it 2-0 in favor of the Lady Colonels with an 8-0 win over Jillian Tallarico and Diana Darby at the No. 1 position.
Xiaoqiao Zhang (Zhengzhou City, China/Warren Hills (N.J.)) and
Alexis Donner (Belmar, NJ/Wall) would complete the doubles sweep with an 8-5 victory over Courtnay Wilson and Lauren Breen.
In singles play, Lynn made it 4-0 after her 6-0, 6-2 win over Wilson, before Zhang clinched the match with her 6-0, 6-1 win over Christy Rossowski at the No. 3 spot. Nolt, playing at the No. 1 position, continued the winning ways for Wilkes with her 6-1, 6-3 win over Tallarico.
Donner, who was recently named the Freedom Conference Player of the Week, continued her unbeaten streak with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Hoffnagle at the No. 4 position. She is now 11-0 this season.
Anna Mitchell (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) and Knight would win their respective matches at the sixth and fifth spots respectively to complete the sweep for Wilkes.
The win improved the Lady Colonels to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in Freedom Conference Play, while King's fell to 9-3 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
