Box Score

The Wilkes University women's tennis team continues to dominate the Freedom Conference as it swept Misericordia 9-0 to improve to 2-0 in league play.

The Lady Colonels cruised through doubles play, not losing more than three games in any of the three matches. The tandem of Michelle Knight (Roaming Shores, OH/Trinity) and Rebekah Shanaman (Richland, PA/ELCO) took an 8-3 win over Jennifer Spott and Ellyn Wingert at the No. 3 spot, while Xiaoqiao Zhang (Zhengzhou City, China/Warren Hills (N.J.)) and Alexis Donner (Belmar, NJ/Wall) matched that performance with an 8-3 win over Maura Haupt and Courtney Otto, giving the Lady Colonels a 2-0 lead. Playing at the No. 1 position, Melanie Nolt (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and Katrina Lynn completed the sweep with an 8-2 victory over Abby Searfoss and Ashley Mangabang.

Like the doubles competition, the Lady Colonels dominated singles play, winning all six matches in straight-sets.

Donner gave Wilkes a 4-0 advantage after her 6-1, 6-0 win over Otto. Lynn would clinch the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Haupt at the No. 2 position before Knight defeated Ellyn Wingert 7-5, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot.

Anna Mitchell (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) continued the winning ways for the Lady Colonels as she gave them a 7-0 lead with her 6-1, 6-0 win over Spott. Zhang would eventually win her match 6-2, 6-2 before Nolt completed the sweep with a 7-5, 6-3 win at the top position.

The Lady Colonels are now 3-0 overall and 2-0 in Freedom Conference play. They will return to action Saturday when they host DeSales at 1 p.m.
