SELLINSGROVE - For the second time in as many nights,
Tom Kresge (Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) put up a double-double to lead Wilkes to a 98-57 win over Penn College of Technology in the second game of the Susquehanna Tournament.
His 26 points and 13 rebounds were both game-highs and was one of three Colonels to score in double-figures. Fellow senior
Anthony Gabriel (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) had one of the best games of his career as he put in 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting while grabbing six rebounds.
Chris Gulla (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) came off the bench to put in 10 points on the day after hitting 4-of-4 shots from the field. Not only were Gabriel and Gulla hot from the field, but the entire Wilkes team torched the nets, hitting 58.2 percent from the field, making 39-of-67 shots from the field as it improved to 2-1 on the year.
For the first time this season the Colonels put together a complete game, scoring 49 points in both the first and second halves and shot nearly the same percentage in both frames. Not only were they impressive offensively, they tallied 16 steals and forced the majority of Penn College's 21 turnovers.
Wilkes was unable to shake Penn College in the first nine minutes of the contest, but it would eventually go on a 10-1 run with 9:58 to go before the break to give the Colonels a 25-10 advantage. They would not lose their double-digit lead the rest of the way. Kresge put in a layup with 4:25 to go before halftime to give Wilkes a 40-24 lead, its largest of the game until Freshman
Steve Blish (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township) hit a jumper with three seconds remaining to give the Colonels a 49-32 halftime lead.
Penn College managed just five points over the first 5:30 of the second half and saw the Colonels widen their lead to 63-39 with 14:37 to go. The 24-point advantage would eventually grow to a 44-point lead when
Matt Meier (Endicott, N.Y./Seton Catholic) made a layup after
Greg Colucci (Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) picked up a steal. Meier's bucket made the score 98-54 in favor of Wilkes, capping off a 16-2 run.
All 15 players saw action for Wilkes and all but two players scored at least one point. The Colonels out-rebounded Penn College 46-29 and have now grabbed more boards than their opponent in all three games this season.
