SALISBURY, Md. – Gina Stefanelli (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Meyers) picked up six hits while
Cori Saltzer (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East) hit a three-run homer to offset 11 errors by Wilkes in its first two games of the Seagull Classic that saw the Lady Colonels defeat Shenandoah 11-7 before falling to Lynchburg 9-7.
In the win over Shenandoah, the Lady Colonels had 10 hits, two for extra bases, including a 3-for-3 performance by Stefanelli, who drove in three runs and scored two times in the win.
Wilkes scored three runs in the first inning before Shenandoah put up two in the second before tying the game in the third. A one-run fourth gave Wilkes an early lead, but the Hornets countered with two runs in the same frame.
A six-run fifth gave the Lady Colonels the lead for good despite a three runs in the same inning by Shenandoah.
Kathy Dalton (Neptune, N.J./St. Rose) was 1-for-2 with three runs scored, while
Keelia Mailander (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff) picked up two hits, an RBI and a run scored in the victory.
Maureen Pelot (Kirkville, N.Y./Chittenango) pitched all seven innings for the Lady Colonels, giving up eight hits and seven runs, three of which were earned. Wilkes committed a season-high six errors in the win.
In the second game, Wilkes came back from a 4-0 deficit to tie the game with four runs in the fifth before Lynchburg took the lead for good with five runs in the bottom of the frame. A three-run sixth brought the Lady Colonels within two, but the game was called in the bottom of the sixth due to inclement weather.
Lindsay Behrenshausen (Mt. Holly Springs/Boiling Springs) pitched five innings and gave up all nine runs, all of which were unearned. The Wilkes defense committed five more errors, which a 2-for-3 performance by Saltzer, including a three-run blast could not overcome. Stefanelli was 3-for-4 with a double as she went 6-for-7 in the opening two games.
