With its perfect 10-0 record on the line, the Wilkes University women's tennis team pulled out a 5-4 nail biter over Moravian in a match that lasted over four hours.
The Lady Colonels got on the board first when the duo of
Michelle Knight (Washington, Pa./Trinity) and Rebecca Shanaman took an 8-3 win over Anna Meola and Melissa Emery at the No. 3 spot.
Victoria Bybel (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) and
Kristin Wilt (Milton, Pa./Milton) made it 2-0 with an 8-4 win over MaryKate Kelly and Kerry McKinley.
The Greyhounds closed the gap after Jami Fein and Dyana Swan defeated
Xiaoqiao Zhang (Zhengzhou City, China/Warren Hills (N.J.)) and
Alison McDonald (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) 8-6 at the No. 1 spot.
In singles play, Fein tied the match at two when she defeated
Victoria Bybel (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot. McDonald took a 6-2, 6-2 straight-set win over Kelly to give Wilkes a 3-2 match advantage. Zhang would give the Lady Colonels a 4-2 cushion with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Swan at the No. 2 position.
Wilt gave Wilkes the lead for good with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) win over Kerry McKinley at the No. 4 spot before the Greyhounds would win at the No. 5 and 6 positions.
Wilkes will be idle until it heads to Reading to take on PSU-Berks on Tuesday, March 24.
