The Wilkes University lacrosse team picked up its third-straight win with a 25-8 victory over Misericordia. Freshman goal keeper Allie Zukuft, who did not play the first half, was a menace at the net as she did not allow a goal in the second half and stopped five shots in the process. The Lady Colonels are now 7-3 this year, marking the most wins in a single season in school history. Wikles is now 3-2, which is the most league victories in a season.
The 25-goal outburst is the most this season by the Lady Colonels and marks the fourth time they have surpassed the 20-goal barrier. Seven different players scored for Wilkes with
Melissa Polchinski (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) leading the way with a career-high nine goals to go along with three assists.
Brittney Hodnik (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) was right behind her with six scores and dished out a game-high three assists.
The game was a scoring fest early as both teams combined to score nine goals in the first 10 minutes of play with the Cougars taking an early 5-4 lead with 20:53 to go. Polchinski would score the first two goals for the Lady Colonels before Hodnik and Jordan Brown, who scored three goals on the day, found the back of the net.
Misericordia would eventually lead 6-5 with 16 minutes to play, but the Lady Colonels used a 9-0 run to take a 14-6 lead and control of the match. Polchinksi capped off the run with an unassisted score at the 5:39 mark.
Nicole DeAngelis would break the scoring barrage with a goal at the 4:25 mark for the Cougars before Shannon Tinkham would score their final goal with 1:52 to go before the break.
The second half would see Polchinski and Hodnik combine to score five of the team's nine goals in the period, while
Shannon McDonald (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional),
Stephanie Harkins (Larksville, Pa./Holy Redeemer) and
Kat Edwards (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) found the back of the net as well.
