WILKES HOSTS KING’S FOR RIGHT TO PLAY IN FREEDOM CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT

4/28/2009 7:53:06 AM

The Wilkes University softball team will try to extend its season when the Lady Colonels host King's College in the play-in game at 4 p.m. at Ralston Field. The winner will be the No. 4 seed and will take on top-seeded Misericordia in the first round of the Freedom Conference Tournament on Saturday.

The Lady Colonels finished league play with a 10-6 record and currently sit fourth, while King's ended their season with a 9-7 conference mark. The two teams split earlier in the year at King's with the Lady Monarchs winning the first game 8-0 in five innings before Wilkes took an 11-9 victory in the second.

Wilkes will be the host institution for the Freedom Conference Tournament no matter what happens in the play-in game. While the Cougars hold the top spot, DeSales will come to Edwardsville as the No. 2 seed and Delaware Valley enters as the No. 3 seed.

Shortstop Gina Stefanelli (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Meyers) leads Wilkes in nearly every offensive category including batting average (.434), hits (53), doubles (12), homeruns (7), RBI (37), total bases (86) and slugging percentage (.705). As a team, the Lady Colonels are hitting .292 while Lindsay Behrenshausen (Mt. Holly Springs/Boiling Springs) has compiled a 14-5 record in the circle with a 2.49 ERA. She has picked up 105 strikeouts in 126.2 innings and is holding opponents to a .245 batting average.
