The Wilkes field hockey team opened the 2009 season with a bang, recording a 5-2 victory over Scranton, scoring four goals in the second half. Senior Jennifer Keegan (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley) paced the Lady Colonels with two scores on the day, while sophomore Amanda Peters (Catasauqua/Catasauqua) as well as freshmen Trisha Kapes (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton) and Jenna DiSabatino (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) found the back of the cage as well.
The Royals took the early lead when Corrie Szapka scored at the 13:33 mark before the half on an assist by Kaitlyn Tirney. Keegan tied the game nearly four minutes later on her first goal of the game with an assist from DiSabatino. The teams would remain deadlocked at one at the half before Peters put in the game-winner less than one minute in the second half.
Kapes would add to the lead six minutes later with her first collegiate goal before Keegan recorded her second goal of the game. DiSabatino would make it 5-1 as she flipped the ball over goal keeper Deirdre Rocklein for her first collegiate goal. “Jen (Keegan) had a great game as well as Brittany Sines (Afton, N.Y./Afton Central),” head coach Sara Myers said. “Jenna's goal was amazing. To flip the ball over the goalies head was pretty neat.”
Although Myers is happy with the win, she knows the team has things they need to work on. “I think we still have a lot of kinks to work out. It was a great way to start the season, but we have so many new people playing different positions,” Myers said.
Wilkes out-shot Scranton 13-4 and had seven shots on goal to the Royals' three.
The Lady Colonels will return to action Saturday when they head to Bethlehem to take on Moravian at 1 p.m.
