The Wilkes University women's field hockey team hosted a game against a talented 3-1 Keystone squad Thursday, ultimately defeating the Giants by a score of 5-2. The Lady Colonels would explode in the second period for four goals to seal the victory.
Wilkes possessed the ball for most of the first half, keeping the pressure on Giant goalkeeper Melinda Moore with 17 shots, two of which were on goal. The Colonels were finally able to crack the Giant defense in the 28th minute when senior midfielder
Brittany Sines (Afton, N.Y./Afton Central) scored an unassisted goal to put Wilkes up 1-0, a lead they would retain the rest of the contest.
The pace of the game would pick up in the second period, as six of the seven total goals were scored in the final 35 minutes. Three minutes into the half freshman
Cassie DiSabatino (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) found Sines near the goal, where Sines was able to punch it in for the Lady Colonel's second score of the game. Eleven minutes later the Giants responded on a goal by Nicole Macedonio to make the score 2-1.
Wilkes would retaliate in the 52nd minute when senior
Amanda Tilley (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) found fellow senior
Jennifer Keegan (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley) for Wilkes' third goal of the game. Once again, the Giants would have an answer as Kellina Yarrish pulled Keystone back within one, 3-2.
In the 62nd minute Giant goalkeeper Melinda Moore received a yellow card, removing her from the game for five minutes. Wilkes would take full advantage, scoring twice before the games end.
Cassie DiSabatino (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) rifled a shot from 15 yards out on the right side of the circle in the 63rd minutes to give Wilkes a comfortable lead of 4-2 with less than seven minutes left. Sophomore
Amanda Peters (Catasauqua/Catasauqua) would add another goal on a pass from
Cassie DiSabatino (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) in the last three minutes to seal the game, 5-2.
Defensively, Wilkes allowed only six total shots to be taken, and sophomore goalie
Lindsey Davenport (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) recorded two saves and allowed only two goals. She, as well as the Lady Colonels, improves to 5-0 on the season.
Wilkes will look to keep their unbeaten streak alive when they host Marywood on Saturday, Sept. 18 at Artillery Park. The game will being at 12:00 pm.
