RIVALRY GAME HOLDS EXTRA INCENTIVE FOR COLONELS

1/15/2010 3:10:48 PM

This Saturday the Wilkes University men's basketball team (9-5, 1-3) heads across Wilkes-Barre to take on rival King's College (7-8, 3-1) in Freedom Conference action. The Colonels are currently 1-3 in conference play, and their contest this weekend could either springboard them towards a turnaround or dig a deeper deficit in the conference playoff race.

Last season, Wilkes took care of the Monarchs twice, 80-71 and 80-72. In those two games forward Tom Kresge (Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) combined for 41 points and 18 rebounds. The senior from Brodheadsville, Pa. will once again play a big role in whether or not the Colonels can take care of King's this weekend.

Kresge is lead Wilkes in both scoring and rebounding in the 2009-10 season, averaging 19.1 points and 9.5 rebounds a contest. He also has 16 blocks and is shooting just under 38 percent from beyond the arc. Junior Chris DeRojas (Dallas/Bishop O'Reilly) is adding 14.2 points a game, leading the team in three-pointers with 27. Anthony Gabriel (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) has been a solid post presence, putting in over 12 points and pulling down over seven rebounds a night for a Colonel team that is out-rebounding its opponents by five boards a game.

Wilkes will have to stop the duo of Kevin Conroy and Mike Wagner of King's to claim victory. Conroy is averaging over 14 points a game, while Wagner is putting in 10.4 points a night, hitting on 36 three-pointers already this season while shooting 43 percent from beyond the arc. As a team, the Monarchs are shooting over 34 percent from downtown.

The game will be broadcast live by Fox Sports Radio – The Game, and will be available to listeners throughout the region on Fox Sports Radio at 1340 AM in Wilkes-Barre, 1400 AM in Scranton, and 1280 AM in Berwick. Calling the game will be Mike Remish and Jim Riley.

The game will begin at approximately 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16 at King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Live Stats can be view at this site.
