WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's tennis team competed in its first dual match of the year on Wednesday, defeating Dickinson 5-2 before the match was called due to lack of lighting.
In doubles play Wilkes swept the Red Devils, as
Melanie Nolt (Manheim, Manheim Central) and
Victoria Bybel (Lancaster, Lancaster Mennonite) defeated their opponents 9-7.
Allison Kristofco (Hollidaysburg , Bishop Guilfoyle) and
Alexis Donner (Belmar, NJ, Wall) won 8-6 from the second position, while
Rebekah Shanaman (Richland, ELCO) and
Michelle Knight (Roaming Shores, OH, Trinity) won the third position doubles match 8-3.
In singles play Wilkes needed two victories to seal the win, which they got from
Alexis Donner (Belmar, NJ/Wall) and
Amanda Holyk (Scranton, Scranton Prep). Donner won 6-4, 6-3, while Holyk defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-1. Bybel and Shanaman fell to their opponents, Bybel 6-0, 6-3, and Shanaman 6-5, 6-0. Nolt and Kristofco were still in their matches when the two teams decided to end the contest due to darkness.
Wilkes took down the victory 5-2, and won't play in another dual match until next March.
