WILKES-BARRE – Wilkes University lost to rival King's College 6-1 in a Freedom Conference field hockey matchup on Tuesday night at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
King's (11-3, 4-1) took control from the outset, getting off 11 shots in the first half. The Lady Colonels were able stand strong defensively, as
Lindsey Davenport (Dallas, Dallas) allowed just two goals and stop four shots in the game's first 35 minutes.
The Monarchs were too tough in the second half, getting off nine more shots, scoring on four of them. Wilkes got on the board at the 45:25 mark when
Gina Elmy (Wilkes-Barre, G.A.R) hit the back of the cage with a rocket off a pass from
Marni Mancini (Mountain Top, Crestwood) on a penalty corner.
Wilkes honored senior
Rachel Cannuli (Jobstown, NJ, North Burlington) prior to the game, her final one at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
The Lady Colonels also participated in “Play 4 the Cure,” a Susan G. Komen program created as a breast cancer awareness initiative. The proceeds of t-shirts sold by the team went to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. It was also the start of Wilkes field hockey's “Guest Coach Program,” in which invited faculty and staff members joined the team on the bench. Invited tonight was former Wilkes field hockey assistant coach and Wilkes Athletic Hall of Famer, Mary Jo Frail Hromchack and staff member Gretchen Yeninas.
The Lady Colonels (4-8, 0-5) will go on the road for their final four games, starting with this Saturday's game at Delaware Valley.
