WILKES-BARRE –
Michelle Wakeley (Endicott, N.Y., Union-Endicott) ran a school 5K record 19:32 to place fifth overall as the Wilkes University men's and women's cross country teams competed in the Nevins Invitational at East Stroudsburg University. The meet is the final one for Wilkes before next weekend's Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) championships in Doylestown.
Wakeley's time was less than one second behind the fourth place runner and was the top non-East Stroudsburg finisher on the day.
Kara Engle (Hamlin, N.Y., Hilton),
Olivia Waszkiewicz (Sauquoit, N.Y., Sauquoit) and
Stacey Skates (Waymart, Pa., Western Wayne) also turned in Wilkes top 10 times, finishing with times of 21:15, 21:29 and 21:56, respectively.
Laura Nulton (Laceyville, Elk Lake) was the fifth Lady Colonels finisher, crossing the line with a time of 22:39.
On the men's side,
Austin Loukas (Windham, Maine, Windham) was the top Colonels finisher with a time of 17:37. The posted time was the Wilkes men's top 5K time since 2008.
Matthew Buono (Goshen, N.Y., Goshen) came in right behind Loukas, finishing with a time of 17:40.
Mark Ricci (West Chester, Pa., Baynard Rustin) (19:25),
Chris Manzi (Toms River, N.J., Toms River North) (19:45),
Jeff Kinney (Kingston, Pa, Coughlin) (21:46) and
Robert Bechaud (Hackettstown, N.J., Hackettstown) (22:37) rounded out the rest of the Colonels finishers.
Wilkes wraps up its regular meet season and will travel to Doylestown and Delaware Valley College, the host of the MAC championships, next Saturday.
