WILKES-BARRE – Wilkes University is alive in all nine brackets of the 2010 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Women's Tennis Individual Championships, as the tournament moves onto the second day of competition on Sunday.
Receiving a bye as the top seed in the no. 1 singles bracket,
Melanie Nolt (Manheim, Manheim Central) moved to the second round, defeating Manhattanville's Nell Kucich 6-1, 6-1. She advances to the semifinals against Alena Marani of Elizabethtown.
Victoria Bybel (Lancaster, Lancaster Mennonite), receiving a top seed in the no. 2 singles bracket, also moved on after a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lauren Fuler of Lebanon Valley. She'll face Akashi Sayumi of Lycoming in the semifinals on Sunday morning.
Also advancing for Wilkes in the singles brackets were
Allison Kristofco (Hollidaysburg , Bishop Guilfoyle) at no. 3,
Rebekah Shanaman (Richland, ELCO) at no. 4,
Alexis Donner (Belmar, NJ, Wall) at no.5 and
Amanda Holyk (Scranton, Scranton Prep) at no. 6. Each started out as the top seed in their respective bracket.
In doubles action, Nolt and Bybel teamed in the no. 1 bracket to beat Albright 8-0 and Misericordia 8-5, advancing to the finals on Sunday. Kristofco and Donner also advanced, beating Eastern 8-1 before defeating Elizabethtown 8-4. At third doubles, the team of Shanaman and
Michelle Knight (Roaming Shores, OH, Trinity) defeated Misericordia before beating Lycoming.
All three of the Lady Colonels doubles pairings were number one seeds as well.
The finals in each of the doubles brackets will begin tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. Following will be the semifinals and finals of all six singles brackets.
