PURCHASE, N.Y. – Boasting just three upperclassmen on its roster, the Wilkes University lacrosse team opened the 2010 season against Manhattanville. After playing a tough first half, trailing just 7-4, the Lady Colonels would eventually fall to the Valiants 20-5.

Manhattanville, which played its sixth game of the season, used an offensive surge in the second half, out-scoring Wilkes 13-1 in the period to improve to 1-5 on the year.

The Valiants opened the game with two goals in the first seven minutes before Amelia Farnham (Guilford, CN/Guilford HS) cut the lead in half at the 22 minute mark when she took a pass from Erica Sundberg (Mullica Hill, N.J./Kingsway HS) for her first goal of the season. She would quickly tie the game up 1:59 later on an unassisted goal at the 18:01 mark. Manhattanville would eventually take the lead for good when it scored three-straight goals over the next five minutes to hold off the Lady Colonels.

Sundberg got into the scoring act as well as she put in Wilkes' third goal of the game at the 10:47 mark on an assist from Farnham. She put in her second goal of the day two seconds before halftime to cut into the Valiant lead.

Manhattanville opened the second half with 12-straight goals before Farhnam put in her third goal of the game at the 12:10 mark.

Cassie Cronin (Manchester, NH/Manchester Memorial) played all 60 minutes between the pipes for the Lady Colonels where she picked up nine saves on the day.

Wilkes will be back in action on Monday when it hosts FDU-Florham on Monday at 4 p.m. at Ralston Field.
