The Lady Colonel women's tennis team faced its first home test of the season when it hosted regionally-ranked Elizabethtown and came out victorious as Wilkes took a 5-4 win over the Blue Jays.
Wilkes entered the match ranked 12th in the region, while Elizabethtown is slated at No. 19. The Blue Jays took the early momentum by winning two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead. At No. 1 doubles, Emily Swarr and Jess Russell took an 8-5 win over the freshman duo of
Melanie Nolt (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and Katrina Lynn before Etown's Allison Burkhardt and Madison Pipkin won their match 8-4 over
Victoria Bybel (Lancaster/Lancaster Mennonite) and
Alexis Donner (Belmar, NJ/Wall) at the No. 2 spot.
Xiaoqiao Zhang (Zhengzhou City, China/Warren Hills (N.J.)) and
Rebekah Shanaman (Richland, PA/ELCO) finally got the Lady Colonels on the board with their 8-6 win over Alena Marani and Kristi Noecker at the No. 3 position.
In singles play, Bybel tied the match at two with a 6-3, 6-1 straight set win over Burkhardt before Lynn gave Wilkes the lead for good after her 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 victory over Russell. Playing at the top spot, Nolt gave the Lady Colonels a 4-2 advantage with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 win over Swarr before Zhang clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No. 5 spot.
Elizabethtown would eventually take wins at the No. 4 and No. 6 position after Wilkes had the victory in hand.
With the win, the Lady Colonels improved to 9-1 on the year and will be back in action Tuesday when they take on Bloomsburg on the road.
