Box Score

The Wilkes University women's lacrosse team hosted Middle Atlantic Conference foe Alvernia on Wednesday at Ralston Field, and after 60 minutes of action, fell to the Crusaders 16-5.

Wilkes came into the contest with a 0-2 (0-2) record, while the Crusaders were 3-2 (0-2) before the match began.

It didn't take long for the Crusaders to grab an early commanding lead, as in the first two and a half minutes they scored two goals, both put in by Alyssa Verrillo. They then scored two more goals within less than a minute of one another, taking a 4-0 lead just over five minutes into the contest.

Wilkes answered in the 23rd minute, as Amelia Farnham (Guilford, CN/Guilford HS) penetrated the Crusader defense and shot in the Lady Colonel's first goal of the contest. Alvernia answered a few minutes later, scoring two goals in 10 seconds and taking a five goal lead. In the 17th minute, Jacqueline Harrison scored on a free position goal, narrowing the deficit to four.

The teams then exchange a goal a piece, as Farnham scored for a second time in the contest. Alvernia then scored four quick goals, expanding its lead to eight with over ten minutes in the half. The Crusaders tacked on two more goals, scoring six unanswered goals with the half running down. Wilkes threatened at the end of the half, but couldn't get a good shot off, making the score 13-3 at the break.

The second half began just as the first one left off, as Alvernia scored two goals in three minutes, giving it a 12 point lead. Wilkes scored two more goals near the end of the contest on scored by Amanda Tilley (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and Erica Sundberg (Mullica Hill, N.J./Kingsway HS), but it was too little too late, as Alvernia cruised to a 16-5 victory.

Wilkes was led by Farnham with two goals, while Harrison, Sundberg and Tilley each had one. Cronin had 14 saves in the contest, but allowed 16 shots to pass by.

The Lady Colonels will look to bounce back when they host Lancaster Bible on Tuesday, March 30. That game will begin at 4:00 p.m. at Ralston Field.
