MADISON, N.J. – FDU-Florham broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off homer, giving the Devils a 3-2 win in game one before getting four runs in the sixth in game two to take a 10-4 victory in the night cap.
After falling 9-5 yesterday at home to FDU-Florham, the two teams met again in Madison, N.J. for a pair of games where runs were a commodity in the first contest. Wilkes put up a run in the top of the second when
Mike McAndrew (Avoca, Pa./Pittston Area) doubled to plate
Scott Skammer (Dallas, PA/Dallas), who reached on a fielder's choice.
Colonel starter
Ryan Fetterman (Endicott, NY/Maine Endwell ) pitched six strong innings, giving up five hits and three runs, two of which were earned. He struck out five and walked just two.
Wilkes would add to their lead in the top of the sixth when
Mike Brennan (New Ringold, Pa./Marian Catholic) doubled in Trevin Jaggers, who pinch ran for
Joel Watson (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale). Watson reached on a two-out hit-by-pitch.
Cruising through the sixth inning, Fetterman tossed back-to-back groundouts before the Devils hit two-straight singles. A Wilkes error allowed one run before a double drove in the second run to tie the game at two.
After retiring the Colonels in order, FDU-Florham's Ryan Fandel hit not only a leadoff, but a walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh to give the Devils a game-one victory.
In the second game, despite committing eight errors, the Devils out-slugged Wilkes en route to handing the Colonels their third-straight loss. They scored early and often, including four runs in the bottom of the first with a leadoff homer as well as a two-run blast by Fandel in the same inning.
Wilkes would cut into the lead with a run in the top of the third when it took advantage of two Devil errors in the frame, allowing
Tom Plessl (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland ), who singled to right, to score from third on an error off the bat of
Matt Ruch (Dallas, Pa./Holy Redeemer ).
After FDU answered in the bottom of the third and fourth with single runs, the Colonels bounced back for two more scores in the top of the fifth thanks to two more errors by the Devil fielders.
Carmen Lopresto (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) led off the inning with an infield single before McAndrew reached on a fielder's choice, but a throwing error allowed him to advance to second. Ruch followed with an infield single, advancing McAndrew to third before
Rich Cosgrove (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Myers H.S.) reached on an error, while McAndrew scored.
Wilkes would close the gap to 6-4 in the sixth after two more errors by FDU allowed Plessl to score after getting hit by a pitch.
Just as the momentum was going Wilkes' way, FDU plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the victory. In the final frame, the Devils hit two more round-trippers as well as a double and single for their tenth win of the season.
The losses dropped the Colonels to 4-9 overall and 0-6 in Freedom Conference play. They will be back in action on Monday when they host Keuka at 3:30 at Artillery Park.
